Salem, Ore. - Led again by senior captain Chris Ferren-Cirino, who continues to solidify himself as one of the best runners in the west region, the UC Davis men's cross country team claimed the championship in the gold division at the 32nd Annual Charles Bowles Invitational at Bush Park in Salem, Ore. on Saturday with a total of 70 points. The women's squad, led by junior captain Lorin Scott, battled through some tough situations to earn a solid sixth-place showing in the women's gold division.

Hosted by Willamette University, the men's score of 70 points in the 8-kilometer race put them 22 points ahead of Team XO and 25 ahead of the University of Washington in the 20-team competition. The women scored 156 points in their 5K race to finish almost 30 points ahead of San Diego State and 13 other teams. Oregon State put in a dominant performance to claim the team title with only 40 points.

Forest Braden of Boise State claimed the men's title in 23:52 while unattached runner Dee Olson won the women's race in 17:01.

"We'll take the win, but I think some of the guys would've like to have run faster," said men's coach Chris Puppione. "You never want to frown on a win, but we can put in a better performance. I've said this after every event this season, but we've still got a lot of work to do. This was not our ideal race as far as pace went."

Ferren-Cirino jumped out to the lead from the start of the race, which began at a slower pace. He stayed up front throughout a majority of the race until a couple runners passed him on their final kick. His time of 24:13 was good enough to place him in the third for the third consecutive race.

Jorge Murillo again stayed up with Ferren-Cirino as the team's No. 2 runner as he laid off for a majority of the race before turning it on in the final miles to pass over 20 runners and finish seventh in 24:31. K.C. Cody ran a consistent race throughout and came in 19th (24:56).

The most pleasant surprise of the day for the Aggies was the performances by freshmen Thomas Dileo and Arran Rogerson who finished 26th and 45th, respectively, to help claim the team title. Dileo stepped up big in the middle miles and set a personal-best time (25:06) for the second consecutive week. Rogerson's time of 25:26 bettered his previous personal-best by 55 seconds.

"Our freshman were huge today," said Puppione. "Things didn't happen the way we wanted them too, but we had people step up and help us out."

Christopher Pecot, Scott Himmelberger, Keli Parker and Mark Lonac all enjoyed solid races as they all finished in under 40 seconds of one another to solidify the Aggies back runners.

The women's team enjoyed a solid performance from its runners despite some bumps along the road. Still stricken with a bit of a cold, Scott continued to lead the team as her time of 18:17 brought her home in 23rd place. Brianna Larson followed closely behind in 35th (18:31) despite limping most of the way after she aggravated a foot injury.

Jenny Perham, Laura Sharp and Amy Robinson finished only seven seconds apart in 44th, 50th and 51st, respectively, to round out the Aggie scorers.

Kelsey Kaiser also enjoyed a solid race with her 60th-place time of 19 minutes after returning from a sickness. Despite serious respiratory problems, freshmen Tiffany Knox and Alison Stoakley managed to fight their way to finishing the race.

"I though we could've been a top-three team here, but coming in the top-six is kind of what we expected," stated women's coach Deanne Vochatzer. "I'm hoping we can start to get healthy."

"I'm a little bit impatient," continued Vochatzer. "I'd like to see us start to make more progress. Right now were making baby steps...we need to start taking giant leaps."

The Aggies also sent sophomore Chris Fuller and freshmanBen DeLand to the Stanford Invitational in an effort to get them more experience. Fuller finished the challenging 8K course in 25:52 while DeLand crossed the line in 28:07.

The UC Davis cross country teams will take off next week in an effort to recuperate and heal themselves before the final tune up prior to the Independent Championships. Next up for the Aggies is the Santa Clara Invitational on Oct. 14.
