Aggies Fall In Three At Thunderdome Opener

Sept. 20, 2006

Box Score

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - Senior Jamie Garbisch, the reigning Big West Conference Player of the Week, finished with a match-high 16 kills and hit .406 to lead UC Santa Barbara to a 30-24, 30-17, 30-19 sweep over UC Davis in non-conference women's volleyball action at the Thunderdome Wednesday evening.

The Aggies, ending a string of 12 straight road matches to start the 2006 season, drop to 1-11 overall. The Gauchos improve to 6-5 in their 2006 home opener.

Senior middle blocker Olivia Waldowski added 12 kills and hit .500, while freshman left-sider Rebecca Saraceno served up six aces to go with her 10 kills on offense. UCSB hit .359 as a team, including .421 in the opening game, and victimized their guests for 11 aces and 10.5 total blocks.

Freshman Britt Erickson, sophomore Chantal Paschetta and senior Rachel Keener each compiled seven kills to pace the UC Davis offese. Erickson also led the Aggies defensively, picking up eight of her team's 34 digs.

UCSB pulled away from relatively close starts in each of the first two games. Keener put down a pair of kills early in Game 1 to help the Aggies craft a 12-9 lead, but a kill and block by Gaucho junior Lauren McLaughlin later turned that edge into a 15-14 deficit. Waldowski teamed up with Stephanie Brandt on a block, then knocked down another kill to stretch that lead to 19-15. UC Davis never approached closer than four points after that in the first game.

Saraceno had three aces during a run of seven unanswered points to help the Gauchos break open a close 13-12 advantage to more comfortable 20-12 lead in the second game. Garbish later added two kills to pad the margin to 24-15, and junior middle Brett Quirarte had two kills in the final run to give UCSB a 2-0 lead in games.

The Gauchos struck early in Game 3, getting two more aces from Saraceno and a block assist and solo stuff from McLaughlin during a 9-2 start. The UCSB protected that lead for the remainder of the match, never allowing UC Davis to close within fewer than six points en route to the sweep.

UC Davis returns home to host Long Beach State on Saturday. Match time at the Pavilion is 7 p.m.
