BERKELEY, Calif. - Junior outside hitter Angie Pressey had 14 kills and hit .462 while sophomore Morgan Beck added eight total blocks to lead 17th-ranked California to a 30-16, 30-19, 30-19 sweep of UC Davis at the Cal Molten Classic women's volleyball tournament Saturday at Haas Pavilion.The match is the first of two for each team during the tourney's second-day action.
The Aggies fall to 0-2 for the season. The Golden Bears, which swept Montana in Friday's late match, improve to 2-0.
Senior Nicole Read and junior Katelyn Astruc were the only UC Davis players to hit in positive figures for the match. Read posted a team-high seven kills on 22 swings while Astruc was 2-0-4 offensively. Freshman libero Avreeta Singh led the Aggies with 11 digs and senior middle Rachel Keener paced the net defense with four total blocks.
For Cal, freshman Hana Cutura added 11 kills, including five in the third game. Senior libero Jillian Davis picked up 24 digs to lead a trio of Golden Bears in double figures defensively. Beck contributed 14 digs and setter Samantha Carter chipped in 10.
Early offense from Pressey and Carter helped Cal craft a 16-4 lead to open the first game. Carter later served up four straight points, getting back-to-back Pressey kills, to push that lead up to 23-6. Keener posted two blocks late in the game to send UC Davis on a late 6-1 run but late points by Pressey and junior Ellen Orchard helped the Bears finish their Game 1 task.
Cal similarly started Game 2 on an early rush, when blocks by Beck, Cutura and Orchard crafted a 10-3 lead. Beck's fifth block of the match put the Bears up by an 18-8 margin before the Aggies scored five unanswered points to approach within an 18-13 deficit. Aggie freshman Britt Erickson deftly sent a shot down the line and sophomore Paschetta jump-served an ace against Cutura as part of that run. However, the Golden Bears rallied back immediately, getting consecutive kills from Cutura and a solo block by Beck to stretch their advantage back to 21-13. The Aggies scooped up 21 of their 39 total digs but hit minus-.042 offensively in the second-game loss.
UC Davis battled its host early in Game 3, staying within a 6-4 deficit early and 14-9 later in the match. Cutura had a block assist and a kill to help bump Cal's lead up to 17-9, then the Aggies scrambled their way back to a 20-14 margin. Read had her best offensive effort in the third, posting four kills with no errors and sophomore Kelly Patterson sparked the net defense with a pair of blocks. Nonetheless, Cal's 18 kills, 21 digs and five blocks in Game 3 kept the Aggies at bay and back-to-back Orchard kills finally sealed the sweep.
The Aggies will face Montana in Saturday's 4:30 match. The Grizzles fell to Baylor in a 30-25, 30-21, 30-18 sweep during a match played simultaneously with the UC Davis-Cal tilt.
