IRVINE, Calif. - Redshirt freshman Tolulope Wusu won both the men's long jump and triple jump, representing two of UC Davis' nine first-place finishes at the All-Cal Challenge Cup collegiate track and field meet at UC Irvine's Anteater Stadium Saturday. Wusu posted a winning leap of 6.93 meters, or 22 feet, nine inches, in the long jump. He added a triple jump effort of 14.91 meters, or 48-feet-11, to win that event by a one-foot margin.

The Aggie women, winners of two events plus a relay, finished third in the five-team field with a team total of 173.5 points. The Aggie men placed fourth at 175. UC Santa Barbara won both team competitions with a men's total of 251.5 and a women's score of 248. The meet field comprised five University of California institutions: Davis, Santa Barbara, Riverside, Irvine and San Diego.

"This is one of the best meets we've ever had for this time of the year, especially with a team this young We had a lot of good performances by freshmen," said UC Davis head women's coach Deanne Vochatzer. "To finish as well as we did with just 19 men and 19 women is a great meet."

Five of the six Aggie men's event wins came from freshmen. Besides Wusu's double, Micah Grant captured the 400 meters at 48.86, Ben Johnson claimed the 800 with a 1:55.09, and Matthew Swarbrick was victorious in the discus throw with a mark of 48.59 meters (159-5). The sixth UC Davis win went to senior Roland Chu, who edged UC San Diego's Matt Maybeno for the win in the 100 meters. Chu crossed in 11.04, winning by a margin of less than one-hundredth of a second.

In addition to his effort in the quarter-mile, Grant also anchored both UC Davis relays. The 4x100 squad finished third at 42.26, while the 4x400 team placed in a solid second at 3:18.31.

On the women's side, junior Gretchen Haussler and freshman Chelsea Azevedo finished 1-3 in the 100 hurdles to give UC Davis a 18-point push - just one shy of the maximum a team can score in a single event. Haussler hit a personal-best 14.31 to win by more than six-tenths of a second, hiwle Azevedo opened the year at 14.96. Haussler and Azevedo's times rank second and eighth in the school record book.

Abby Galloway won the 3,000 steeplechase with a personal-best time of 11:33.42, moving in the fourth on the all-time Aggie top 10 list.

Junior sprinter Danielle Green also enjoyed a solid overall meet. Green placed second in the 100-meter dash at 12.32 and fourth in the 200 at 25.39. She also anchored the Aggies' winning 4x100 relay squad, which combined for a 47.56 time. Freshman Willa Porter joined Green in both the 4x100 relay and the third-place 4x400 team. She also added fifth-place marks in both the 200 (25.42) and 400 (59.75).

UC Davis returns home to host the Aggie Open on March 10-11. The meet begins on Friday with the women's and men's hammer throws at Sacramento City College. All other events take place at the Woody Wilson Track on Saturday.
