STOCKTON, Calif. - Freshman middle blocker Meagan MimMack posted a match-high 20 kills against just one error for a .543 hitting average to lead Pacific to a 30-24, 28-30, 30-32, 30-14, 15-10 win over UC Davis in non-conference women's volleyball action at the Spanos Center Thursday.
Senior outside hitter Nicole Read led UC Davis with 18 total kills, including five in a gripping Game 3 Aggie win. She continues to inch closer toward becoming the seventh player in school history with 1,000 career digs, bringing her total to 951 with four matches remaining on the schedule.
The Aggies fall to 4-20 for the season. Pacific improves to 7-16, snapping a five-match losing streak.
Read also had a double-double for UC Davis, adding 17 digs to her offensive efforts. Freshman libero Avreeta Singh led UC Davis with 24 digs, while sophomore Chantal Paschetta contributed 15 kills and three aces.
Sophomore Alexa Anderson supported MimMack's offense with 19 kills while Johanna Hilbers added 11 kills and .346 hitting for the Tigers. Junior libero Julie Magud picked up 35 digs to lead all players in the match.
Pacific overcame an early 12-6 deficit in Game 1 to tie the score at 18-18, then pulled away behind the hitting of MimMack and senior middle Natalie Tomaszewska en route to a six-point win. UC Davis then picked off Game 2 down the final stretch, trailing for most of the set, then tying the score at 27-27 on a Paschetta ace. Three straight kills by Rachel Keener, Read and Paschetta erased a late Tiger 28-27 lead to tie the match at one game apiece.
In similar fashion to Game 2, UC Davis trailed for much of Game 3 before setter Katelyn Astruc scored a kill to tie the game at 27-27. A bad Tiger set put the Aggies up by 28-27 -- its first lead in the frame -- but an untimely service error reknotted the score at 28-28. Read put down a kill to set up a 29-28 game point, then Anderson answered with a kill at 29-29. UC Davis managed two more game-point opportunities, finally ending the third game on a combined block by Paschetta and sophomore Kelly Patterson.
Down 2-1 in games, Pacific dominated Game 4, hitting .375 against UC Davis' .083 success rate. Anderson scored three kills in a 5-0 run that pushed the Tigers up by 18-8, then MimMack ended the game with three kills during the final six points. Anderson, who had five her kills in the Game 4 win, scored the game-winner on a solo block.
Both teams traded points in the early stages of the rubber game, then UC Davis took a brief 6-4 lead behind Paschetta and Read kills. The Tigers retied the game at 6-6 on Tomaszewska's ace, then took a one-point lead on an Anderson kill. Later in the frame, UC Davis crept back to a 10-10 tie as Astruc and Keener combined for a block against Anderson. However, Pacific scored five straight points to end the match, getting a kill and a block assist from junior middle Johanna Hilbers.
This is the sixth five-game match of the year for UC Davis, and the second such loss to the Tigers. Pacific had taken the Aggies to five back on October 5, coming back from a 2-0 deficit.
UC Davis returns home to host Cal State Northridge on Saturday. The athletics department will offer a promotion in which fans who attend that afternoon's football game with North Dakota State may attend the match for free upon presentation of their ticket stub. Match time is 7 p.m. at the Pavilion.
