Oct. 17, 2006

Box Score

DAVIS, Calif. - Senior libero Kristin Lutes scooped up 29 of her team's 75 digs to lead Sacramento State to a 30-25, 30-26, 30-27 sweep over UC Davis in non-conference women's volleyball action at the Pavilion Tuesday evening in front of 242.

The Aggies drop to 2-19 for the season. The Hornets, among the teams receiving votes for the CSTV/AVCA Coaches Top 25, improve to 21-4 overall.

Sophomore Chantal Paschetta led UC Davis with a match-high 18 kills and a .275 hitting average, while freshman Britt Erickson and senior Nicole Read each added 10 kills. Read finished with a double-double, recording 16 digs.

Senior outside hitter Atlee Hubbard paced the Hornets with 17 kills with 11 digs, while junior middle Michelle Franz had eight kills on 17 swings for a .412 hitting average. Junior middle Lindsay Haupt chipped in nine kills and a team-best four blocks.

Haupt sent two kills to help Sacramento State pull away from a 9-9 tie to a 15-10 lead early in Game 1, then the Hornets suffered a string of hitting errors to allow UC Davis back to a 15-14 deficit. Paschetta had seven kills on 18 swings in the opener to lead UC Davis offensively, but the Aggies suffered from six service errors as a team. After Read's kill allowed UC Davis to within a 25-23 deficit, Sacramento State scored four straight points -- including three by virtue of UC Davis hitting errors -- to set up a 29-23 game-point footing. Hubbard knocked down her sixth kill of the match to send the Hornets to a 1-0 start.

In Game 2, the Hornets burst out to an 11-6 start, but UC Davis cut into that lead with an ace by Paschetta and a Rachel Keener kill, pulling to within a 12-10 deficit. Sac State pulled away to a 22-17 edge with the help of blocks by Hubbard, Franz and Leah Klemenhagen.

Sacramento State again exploded to a hot start, taking a 19-12 lead on a Lutes ace. UC Davis erased the wide margin with a 7-0 run, capped by back-to-back aces by setter Katelyn Astruc, taking a 21-20 lead. The Aggies bumped the lead up to 24-22 before the Hornets regained their stride. Haupt and Hubbard combined for a block to tie the game at 25-25. Hubbard put down back-to-back kills to seal the win for the Hornets.

The Aggies take a break from action before hosting Cal State Fullerton and UC Riverside on October 26 and 28.
