LA JOLLA, Calif. - Patrick Jacobsen led the Aggie offense with a total of seven goals for the day during the season opening Triton Invitational being held at UC San Diego's Canyonview Pool. UC Davis was able to tally its first win of the season against UC Santa Cruz in an early morning match only to fall against UC Irvine later in the afternoon.
In the morning match-up with UC Santa Cruz, the Aggies took an early lead with a goal from Patrick Jacobson in the first couple minutes of play. Jacobson and senior Conor Duignan each fired in a goal apiece before Santa Cruz was able to place one on the board. As the final seconds of the first quarter wound down, Jacobson was able to find the back of the net for the third time in the match putting the Aggies ahead by three going into the second quarter.
Jacobson added two more goals to the Aggie scoreboard, while sophomores Brian Winkler and Matt Maclachlan each contributed one to UC Davis' final total of eight goals. Despite holding the Aggies scoreless during the third quarter, UC Santa Cruz was unable to overcome its first quarter deficit and ended the game behind UC Davis 8-3.
The afternoon match against the UC Irvine Anteaters proved more difficult for the Aggies. At halftime UC Davis trailed the Anteaters by a single point. Both team's offenses came out strong in the third quarter with the Aggies adding three to their total and Irvine tallying four goals. It was a two-point game going into the final quarter of play, but UC Irvine was able to capitalize on some Aggie errors and come away with a 10-6 win.
Jacobson was able to provide two more goals during the Irvine game, while junior David Welch also scored two. Seniors Conor Duignan and Tom Jay each posted a goal apiece while goalkeeper Mike McGee tallied seven saves in the match-up.
"The game against UC Irvine was a great team effort and a much better game than the earlier game versus Santa Cruz," explained UC Davis assistant coach Jon Burke. "Some of our guys really stepped up and we were within one goal with three minutes left, but we broke down and they were able to capitalize on our mistakes. We played twenty-five minutes of good water polo and three minutes of sloppy polo."
UC Davis now holds a season record of 1-1. The Aggies will continue play on Sunday with two more games.
