Track and Field: Jones Leads Prelims as Aggies Secure Multiple Top-10 Finishes

AZUSA and WALNUT, Calif. – The UC Davis Track and Field team kept the momentum rolling on Friday, April 17, split between the prestigious Bryan Clay Invitational and the Mt. SAC Relays. Highlighting a busy day of competition, Zachary Jones secured a first-place finish in his heat to advance to the finals, leading a group of several Aggies who earned top-10 placements against deep competition.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED (MEN)
 
In Azusa, Zachary Jones provided the highlight of the morning in the 100m Open. Navigating a field of over 100 sprinters, Jones powered to a first-place overall finish with a time of 10.62, comfortably advancing to Saturday's final. Riley Leyva also made a statement in the same event, clocking a 10.92 to secure ninth place overall.
 
At the Mt. SAC Relays, Aidan Hagerty navigated a high-level Pole Vault field to finish ninth overall after clearing 4.85m. Hagerty finished within 0.25m of the individual title in a field featuring several top national programs.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED (WOMEN)
 
The Aggie women were equally effective in the sprints at Bryan Clay. Lily Holman led the charge in the 100m Open prelims, crossing the line in 12.36 to take sixth place and secure her spot in Saturday's final round. In the elite 100m Invite section, Rujeko Munetsi secured a 10th-place finish in 11.68, finishing just 0.35 seconds behind the individual champion.
 
Over at the Mt. SAC Relays, Maya Shinnick secured a 10th-place finish in the 400m Dash, clocking a 53.96 against top-tier national competition. Shinnick finished within 1.5 seconds of the heat leader to claim her top-10 spot.
 
UP NEXT: The Aggies wrap up their three-day Southern California residency tomorrow, Saturday, April 18, with their final day of action at the Bryan Clay Invitational.
