Track and Field: Janik and Churchill Lead Aggie Efforts at Pacific Coast Invitational

LONG BEACH AND AZUSA, Calif. – The UC Davis Track and Field team opened a high-stakes Southern California road trip on Thursday, April 16, returning with several top-10 finishes and a podium performance in tow. Split between the Pacific Coast Intercollegiate and the Bryan Clay Invitational, the Aggies found success early in the jumps and sprints before distance took center stage under the lights.

HOW IT HAPPENED (MEN)

Daren Randolph provided a major spark in the pits during the opening day in Long Beach. Competing in a deep Long Jump field, Randolph leaped 6.93m to claim a fifth-place finish overall, landing less than 0.4m away from the individual title.

On the track, Kathir Balakrishnan secured a top-15 finish in the 400m hurdles, battling through a dense field to cross the line in 14th place with a time of 55.09.

HOW IT HAPPENED (WOMEN)

Dominika Janik turned in the performance of the day on the track, powering through a crowded 800m field to earn a third-place podium finish. Her time of 2:11.48 kept her right on the heels of the leaders, finishing a mere three seconds out of first place.

The Aggie jumpers were equally impressive, securing two more top-10 finishes in the vertical events. Elizabeth Churchill soared to fourth place in the High Jump, clearing 1.68m to finish as one of the top collegiate athletes in the competition. In the Pole Vault, Shae Wright cleared 3.91m to take eighth place overall.

UP NEXT: The Aggies continue their Southern California trip tomorrow, Friday, April 17, as a large contingent returns to action in Azusa for Day 2 of the Bryan Clay Invitational.
