THE SHORT STORY: UC Davis delivered a highly competitive effort on the road, taking one of the Big West's top teams to overtime before ultimately falling 79-69 to UC Irvine in Saturday's regular-season finale.
COURT SIDE
- Niko Rocak paced the offensive attack with a team-high 20 points, knocking down six 3-pointers while adding five rebounds and two blocks. The 20 points and six three-pointers both were career-highs for the graduate forward.
- Brayden Fagbemi provided a strong two-way performance, tallying 16 points, five assists, and a game-high five steals to lead the defensive effort. Fagbemi's 16 points were the most for the Naperville native in an Aggie uniform.
- Isaiah Chappell made an impact from beyond the arc, hitting four triples to finish with 14 points, five rebounds, and four steals.
- Marcus Wilson directed the offense, distributing a game-high eight assists to pair with his nine points.
- As a unit, UC Davis was highly disruptive defensively, forcing 19 Anteater turnovers and collecting 11 steals.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- UC Davis came out firing in the first half, pairing suffocating defense with a barrage of 3-pointers from Chappell, Omer Suljanovic, and Rocak to establish a 38-28 advantage heading into the locker room.
- UC Irvine made its push in the second half, eventually taking a 65-62 lead in the final minutes.
- Showing late-game poise, Rocak buried a crucial, game-tying 3-pointer with 59 seconds remaining in regulation to knot the score at 65-65 and force overtime.
- Fagbemi opened the extra period with a jumper to give the Aggies a brief 67-65 lead. However, UC Irvine controlled the remainder of the period, to come away with the 79-69 win.
