The short story: Nine goals from attacker
Thomas Kiesling gave UC Davis water polo two more wins on the final day of the Triton Invitational. The Aggies beat George Washington in the morning before securing a win over #7 Pepperdine later in the day.
HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME 1)
- Defense was the name of the game in the first, as each team scored only one goal.
- After the Revolutionaries got on the board, Luka Palavra got his team on the board with a man-advantage goal.
- Two minutes into the second, Andrew Hitchcock gave the Aggies a one-goal lead, 2-1.
- As both teams continued to battle, George Washington found the back of the net twice to take a 3-2 lead into halftime.
- Thomas Kiesling got his first of the day to open the third quarter, tying the game at three apiece.
- But Washington continued to attack, quickly adding on two more goals.
- Halfway through the period, the combined efforts of Timothy Kerr, Oleg Shatskikh, and Oriol Viñas gave their team a 3-0 run and the lead.
- One minute later, Kiesling secured two more to push the Aggie lead to three, 8-5.
- The Revolutionaries continued to apply pressure, getting two back before the end of the third.
- With five minutes remaining in regulation, GW tied the match once again at eight.
- But Kiesling's fourth and Shatskikh's second of the day put Davis up once again, holding a 10-8 lead.
- In the final minute, Washington tried to come back with a man-advantage goal, but Waylon Fox put it on ice with an 11-9 Aggie victory.
HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME 2)
- Following a Waves exclusion in the first minute, Adam Ting found the back of the net for his first of the day.
- Pepperdine responded with two quick goals, but Thomas Marr tied things up at two apiece before Kiesling took the penalty shot to give the Aggies the lead once again.
- One minute later, Kiesling scored again before Brody Crouch got his first of the year to give Davis a 5-3 lead after eight minutes.
- In the second, Pepperdine struck early on the man-advantage to put them back within one.
- But it was Kiesling again on the response, securing another hat trick on a man-up goal.
- Kerr would follow up with his first of the match before William Fosselman added another at the end of the period to make it 8-4 Aggies at halftime.
- The Waves would come out firing to start the second half, scoring two quick goals to get back within two.
- Kiesling answered back with his fourth of the match, eighth of the day, to push his team's lead back up to three.
- Despite another Pepperdine goal, two from Shatskikh would keep the lead at four going into the final period.
- Colin Nicholls would get his first of the day on a man-advantage to open the fourth.
- With the Waves' defense holding strong, the offense was able to find the back of the net for two goals, looking to come back with only three minutes left.
- But Kiesling would cash in his fifth, and Shatskikh would secure the hat trick to push the lead out of reach for their opponent.
- Pepperdine would score one more in the waning seconds, but UC Davis would take a 14-10 victory over their ranked opponent.
