The short story: Freshmen Oriol Viñas and
Luka Palavra scored their first career goals as UC Davis men's water polo split day one of the Triton Invitational, losing to UCLA before taking a victory over Pomona-Pitzer.

HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME 1)
- After the Bruins opened the scoring, Oleg Shatskikh got the first Aggie goal of 2025 to tie things at one apiece two minutes into the match.
- UCLA added on two more, but a shot from Andrew Hitchcock put his team back within one, 2-3, at the end of the first.
- Two minutes into the second, with the score reading 5-2 in favor of UCLA, Viñas found the back of the net for his first collegiate goal and put his team back within two.
- However, the Bruins grabbed four more to go up 9-3 at the half.
- In the third, Hitchcock scored his second goal to put Davis within five.Â
- After two goals from UCLA, Big West Preseason attacker Thomas Kiesling got his first score of 2025 with less than a minute remaining in the quarter.
- With the score reading 11-5 in favor of UCLA, the Bruins opened the fourth with five straight goals.
- Palavra got his first Aggie goal with 53 seconds remaining, but Davis would fall in its season opener 16-6.
HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME 2)
- The Aggies came out of the gate quickly, with Thomas Marr and Palavra each scoring in the first 90 seconds of the match.
- The Sagehens would get one back, but Waylon Fox would respond with his first of two on the day to make it 3-1 Aggies.
- Following another Pomona-Pitzer goal, Adam Ting would get on the board to give Davis a 4-2 lead at the end of the first.
- Halfway through the second, Fox would find the back of the net for his second of the day.
- Despite the scoring of the Aggies, the Sagehens kept things close, getting within one, 6-5 with two minutes left in the half.
- But back-to-back goals from Viñas and Timothy Kerr would give UC Davis an 8-5 lead at halftime.
- The third quarter was all Aggies, with goals from Shatskikh, Kiesling, and Hitchcock giving their team an 11-5 lead going into the final frame.
- Following an opening-minute goal from Pomona-Pitzer, Austin Quick would extend the Davis lead with back-to-back goals.
- The Sagehens would get one back, but Davis would go on to claim its first win of the year with a 14-7 victory.
