The short story: The UC Davis women's basketball team secured a season sweep over the Cal State Bakersfield Roadrunners behind a 24-point night from Tova Sabel. The Aggies have also secured a spot in The Big West Tournament.

OPENING TIP
  • With their win tonight, the Aggies have secured their tenth straight winning season, a streak that dates back to the 2015-16 season.
  • Sabel's 20+ point game marks the second straight game she's hit that mark, also the sixth time this season.
  • Despite being limited to two points, Megan Norris led the defensive effort with nine rebounds and two blocked shots.
  • Ally Fitzgerald led all bench scorers with six points on two made threes, the first time in her career she's made multiple triples in a contest.
  • The Aggies stayed active on the defensive side of the ball, forcing Bakersfield into 23 turnovers with 12 steals, including three by Victoria Baker.
  • Davis was effective from the free throw line, shooting over 90% from the stripe for the fourth time this year.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Sabel drove to the basket for a layup on the first possession of the night.
  • Through the first six minutes of the first, each team exchanged baskets, with the score tied at nine apiece with four minutes remaining in the quarter.
  • But the Aggies turned on the burners, with triples from Bria Shine and Ryann Bennett leading a 15-0 run through the final part of the period to give their team a 24-9 lead.
  • In the second, the Davis run continued, with a three-pointer from Nya Epps pushing the lead to as much as 24.
  • Despite the deficit, the Roadrunners continued to fight, pushing the Aggie lead to 17 as both teams went to the locker room with the road team up 39-22.
  • The third quarter was all about defense, as the Ags held their opponent to only three made field goals the entire quarter.
  • Threes from Epps and Fitzgerald anchored the offense in the period, with Davis holding a 50-31 lead going into the final quarter.
  • As the fourth began, Bakersfield looked to climb back into it with a 9-2 run, getting as close as 12 points back from their opponent.
  • But the Aggies held strong, with free throws from Sabel and three-pointers from Fitzgerald and Clara Glad being the difference maker as they would hang on to secure the 66-45 win.

UP NEXT: Davis will wrap up the weekend with a game against the CSUN Matadors on Saturday, Feb. 22. The game is set to tipoff at 2:00 p.m. PT and will be live on ESPN+ and KDVS 90.3.
