The short story: Double-digit performances by
Nya Epps and
Tova Sabel led the UC Davis women's basketball team to victory over the CSUN Matadors on Saturday, Feb. 22.
OPENING TIP
- Epp's led the way with 15 points, her third double-digit game in the month of February.
- Sabel also reached double-digits with 11 points, also adding three rebounds and two steals on the afternoon.
- Sydney Burns effectively set up the offense with a team-high five assists along with five rebounds.
- The Aggie defense was strong all throughout, holding their opponent to under 30% shooting from the field for only the third time this season.
- UC Davis led throughout the entire contest.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Megan Norris got the scoring started early, cashing in on a jumper on the Aggies' first possession.
- In the first six minutes, it was an offensive showcase by committee for Davis, going on a 17-2 run capped off by buckets from Ally Fitzgerald and Victoria Baker.
- The Matadors settled in with field goals of their own, but the Aggies held serve to end the first period up 25-11.
- The second quarter saw much of the same from both teams, as Davis responded to each CSUN bucket with one of their own.
- With less than 30 seconds remaining, Epps cashed in on her 11th point from beyond the arc to give the Ags a 41-25 lead at the half.
- Coming out of the locker room, the third was all Aggies all throughout, with back-to-back three-pointers by Sabel and Epps leading them to a 52-34 lead at the end of the quarter.
- Avery Sussex opened the fourth quarter with two straight buckets, cashing in on a jumper before hitting a fastbreak three on the next possession.
- Ryann Bennett followed that up with her first bucket of the game from beyond the arc.
- CSUN looked to respond with a pair of free throws and a layup, but the Aggies would cruise to a 66-45 win.
