The short story:Â After outlasting Indiana in a 60-point second set, UC Davis volleyball nearly forced a fifth set to complete a comeback but would fall just a few points short in its final match of the opening weekend.
FIRST SERVE
- Junior Jade Light led the attack with 14 kills, adding six digs
- Sophomore Mia Starr recorded 40 assists, and two aces in the match
- Finishing with six blocks, sophomore Ally Chandler also smashed home seven kills
- UC Davis' 33-31 second set win was the first time the Aggies have gone over 60 combined points in a set since 2023 and it's the first time they've won a set with that high of a score since 2022
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Indiana came out and took the opening set, 25-16, taking a quick one-set advantage
- But the Aggies came to play and the second set would be a marathon
- 18 times over the second set the score would be tied, with UC Davis fighting off set point three times before coming away with the dramatic win
- Junior Makena Morrison smashed home a kill on the assist from Starr to put the Aggies up 32-31
- Starr then finished things off in style, tagging a set winning ace that locked up a 33-31 second set victory
- In the third set, the Aggies kept it close over the first half of the set, but after getting withing 12-14 Indiana pulled away to win the third set 25-16
- The Aggies were leading in the fourth set, holding a multi-point lead as late as 23-17, but over the final stretch of the set Indiana caught up to the Aggies to force things past 25 points
- UC Davis had set point at 25-24, but an attack error gave Indiana life and the Hoosiers would score the next two points to survive the Ags late push, 27-25, to take the match 3-1
UP NEXT:Â The Aggies remain on the road with a trip on Sept. 7 to Saint Mary's before opening home when they host Sacramento State on Sept. 10.
