Cross Country Takes First In The Leaderboards At The Stump Invite

Women's Team Finish: First Overall
Men's Team Finish: First Overall
Location: Davis, Calif. (Putah Creek Riparian Reserve)

The Short Story: UC Davis cross country reopened Putah Creek Piparian Reserve with a sweep across the men and women's races, honoring the legacy of Sarah Sumpter with both first place finishers and 15 runners who finished inside the top 10.

HOW IT HAPPENED (MEN): Ethan Brooks was the top athlete to watch, coming in at an impressive time of 24:15.2, which was 36.6 seconds faster than the second placeholder and fellow Aggie Muhammed Ahmed. Hayden Brooks and Ahmed came in at 24:51.8, then followed by Chris Coles, Nick Herrmann, Caden Hicks, Michael Cooper, and Chance Tokubo to fill eight of the top ten slots.

HOW IT HAPPENED (WOMEN):  Maddie Kackley breezes past the competition with an impressive 16:52.3 finish to give her the top spot in the 5k race. Brooke Butler came in hot with a personal record and third place accolades, followed by Lauren Villegas, Shae Hill, Maddie Coles, Fiona McGrath, and Kayla Rutz making the top ten.

The Importance of Stump: The meet itself is named in honor of Sarah "Stump" Sumpter, a former Aggie who was battling a cancer diagnosis while enrolled as a student-athlete for the cross country team. "The team takes great pride in running as tough and as hard as they can in Sarah Sumpter's memory," head coach Emma Petersen praises.

"They wore their uniform with pride and ran for Stump, and we look forward to seeing what these great young Aggies will keep doing the rest of the season."

UP NEXT: The Aggies will travel down to Stockton, California to partake in the Pacific Invite on September 20th for an exciting evening meet.
