The short story: Behind a powerful defensive showing where UC Davis volleyball held Sacramento State to a lethargic .084 hitting percentage, the Aggies came away with a four-set win in their home opener snagging a Causeway Classic win in the process.

WHAT HEAD COACH DAN CONNERS HAD TO SAY
"It always feels great to get a win against our crosstown rivals. We were aggressive from the service line all night, and the team embraced it. We were able to take them out of system pretty much all night and our passers did a great job keeping us right where we wanted to be."

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • In the first set, the Aggies kept a comfortable lead throughout the set and at 17-12 Utterback to the serve and over the next four points two attack errors, a kill from Starr and a service ace by Utterback the Aggies extended their lead to 21-12
  • Sacramento State would get just one more point in the set as Starr held serve over the final four points and following a kill by Light the Aggies locked up a 25-13 first set win
  • The second set was the most competitive of the night, and things would be tied up eight times after 19-19
  • Things got tied up at 26-26 as both sides pushed each other past 25 points after a back-and-forth set
  • Light got a kill to make it 27-26 and she then took serve with UC Davis looking at set point. She then place a serve right where it needed to be for a set winning ace to give the Ags a 28-26 set win and a 2-0 advantage in the match
  • Sacramento State took the third set to avoid the UC Davis sweep, setting a fourth set where the Aggies clamped down
  • UC Davis came out fast and aggressive taking 10 out-of-the first 14 points decided, using a 4-0 run out of the break on service by Light to set the tone for the set
  • Early in the set, Sacramento State twice attempted to slow down the Aggie momentum with timeouts, but it did nothing to damper the Aggie all-out assault in the set
  • By the time Sacramento State got to 10 points the Aggies had already cracked 20 and with a match sealing kill by Light the Aggies finished off the Causeway Classic win with a 25-14 fourth set win
UP NEXT: The Aggies head back on the road when they head to the Huskies Invitational hosted by Washington. The Aggies will face Washington State on Sept. 14 before wrapping up the weekend with a match against hosting Washington on Sept. 15.
