The short story: UC Davis built up a two-goal lead but was hampered by an indirect red card, allowing UC Irvine to capitalize and score two unanswered goals to escape with a 2-2 draw Sunday afternoon at Aggie Soccer Field.
PITCH SIDE
- Prior to kickoff, UC Davis' 11 seniors were honored: Joshlyn Aguirre, Keylei Carroll, Chandler Connors, Teresa Garcia, Caeley Goldstein, Kylie Garcia, Devyn Simmons, Sammie Ruelas, Emma Vane, Bella Mayo, and Sam Tristan
- Vane, one of those seniors, made her impact felt throughout the entire game, recording UC Davis' first goal, assisting on the other Aggie score, and being front and center on a second issued yellow card
- Abella Hunter, after earning her first career start on Thursday, delivered another strong performance, scoring from near mid-field for the Aggies' second goal of the game
- UC Davis and UC Irvine each had 10 shots, with the Aggies having a shot on goal advantage at seven compared to the Anteaters' five
- With the two goals, the 2024 squad ties a Division I era record for most team goals in a single season
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Vane got the Senior Day crowd involved early, scoring in the 4th minute off a rebounded shot from Tristan to give the Aggies the 1-0 lead
- All of the Aggies' four shots in the first half were on target, with opportunities in the 29th and 41st minutes, but the game remained 1-0 after 45 minutes of play
- The crowd was welcomed with another goal early in the second half, with Hunter scoring in the 46th minute on a spectacular shot
- Carrying a 2-0 lead, the game changed in the 60th minute as UC Davis had to play a man down for the final third of the match
- UC Irvine immediately scored in the 61st minute to make it 2-1 after some backline miscommunication
- The Anteaters continued their momentum, scoring again in the 65th minute to make it 2-2
- After the Anteaters tied it up, both sides played through the game's tensions, with the Aggies getting three more shots before the end of regulation, but none resulting in a goal, finishing with a 2-2 draw and earning the Aggies one point in the Big West standings
NEXT UP: After the home stand, the Aggies will be back on the road all next week, facing off against UC Santa Barbara on Thursday, Oct. 24, at 7 p.m. PT, and then Cal Poly on Sunday, Oct. 27, at 12 p.m. PT.
