UC Davis Breaks Records in Foggy Victory Over UC Santa Barbara

Score:  UC Davis 1, UC Santa Barbara 0
Location: Santa Barbara, Calif.
Records:  UC Davis 11-4-2 (4-2-2), UC Santa Barbara 6-4-8 (4-1-4)

The short story: Fog was prevalent all night at Harder Stadium, but it was Sam Tristan who shined through it all, netting her ninth goal of the season and setting a Division I era single-season team goal record for UC Davis. This goal propelled the Aggies to a shutout road win against UC Santa Barbara, marking a career-high 11 wins for Head Coach Tracy Joyner in the process.

PITCH SIDE
  • Tristan's score tonight gives UC Davis 34 goals as a team on the year, setting a new Division I era single-season record for the Aggies, breaking the previous record of 33 goals set by the 2011 squad
  • Joyner's 11th win is a career-high, breaking her previous mark of 10, which she has achieved on multiple occasions (2021, 2023)
  • Assisting on Tristan's goal was Sarah Canavan, who recorded her fifth assist of the season, which is now tied for second in the conference with Sammie Ruelas and trailing only Jayde Holley who leads the league with seven
  • Through the fog, Caeley Goldstein delivered another stellar performance in goal, recording her sixth clean sheet of the season with 10 saves, just two shy of her career-high
  • The win not only gave UC Davis three points but also snapped UC Santa Barbara's nine-match unbeaten streak, which dated back to Sept. 15

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • UC Davis started strong, building their attack early with two shots and a corner kick within the first three minutes
  • The attack would finally break through with Tristan scoring on the Aggies' sixth shot attempt of the night in the 27th minute, giving UC Davis a 1-0 lead
  • Shots continued to be abundant on both sides, with 20 shots between both teams in the first half
  • Despite the flurry of shots, the half would still end with a score of 1-0 in favor of UC Davis
  • After the break, offensive attacks would calm down and remain at a standstill, with the game eventually being halted in the 66th minute due to fog limiting visibility
  • The game resumed with a throw-in, and UC Santa Barbara made a strong late effort with newfound energy
  • UC Santa Barbara shot three more times after the game resumed, with Goldstein collecting two of her 11 saves during this stretch, securing her sixth clean sheet of the season and the 1-0 win to begin the Central Coast road trip

WHAT HEAD COACH TRACY JOYNER HAD TO SAY
In response to setting a career-high win total and a single season Division I era team goal record, Coach Joyner said, "We had big expectations this season and I'm very happy for the team and program to continue building each year. Our players are so talented and so committed. It's been a great season and I'm very proud of how we've grown and for what we've accomplished so far. We aren't done yet!"

NEXT UP: The Aggies will conclude their road trip with a match against Cal Poly on Sunday, Oct. 27 at 12 p.m. PT.
