Davis, Calif. — UC Davis field hockey earned their first win of 2023 in an overtime thriller against Kent State, taking down the Flashes 5-4.
Three different Aggies scored goals in the Aggies highest scoring game of the year with
Audrey Lee and
Lizzy Tedrow pacing UC Davis with two each.
Liselotte Koop picked up the other Aggie goal on a penalty stroke while also registering an assist on the game-winning goal to Tedrow.
Two other Aggies had assists in the game with forward
Skylar Richards and
Ella Franken being responsible for setting up the two Aggie goals in the first period.
From the jump, the game was filled with action, as pictured by the 48 total shots in the game with UC Davis having 23, along with 13 shots on goal.
After rolling through the gauntlet of nationally ranked opponents to begin the season, UC Davis has been steadily improving.
With this competition resulting in some early losses, the Aggies bounced back in a big way to start Sunday's game and exhibited a different energy level, scoring two quick early goals to take a 2-0 in the first 10 minutes.
With offense characterizing the game, Kent State wouldn't go down without a fight. Just seconds after allowing the second goal of the game, the Flashes scored to bring the deficit to just one.
This would kickstart the run of four unanswered goals for Kent State as the Flashes rattled off three goals in the second period to take a 4-2 lead into the half.
Even with the offensive side of both squads being the prominent figure,
Sarah Lopez continued to shine in goal for UC Davis, adding to her America East lead save total by stopping 13 shots today. Facing a whopping 25 shots, Lopez has been a wall all season against some of the best teams in the country.
With the 4-2 deficit going into the second half, the Aggies would find their rhythm and rattle off two goals with Koop getting capitalizing on her penalty in the 39th minute, while Tedrow scored in the 57th to tie the game at four a piece.
After a few late shots from both sides, the game would end regulation tied at 4-4, giving UC Davis their first taste of overtime this season.
With tensions heavy and scoring abundant, UC Davis would finally rejoice in the 71st minute with Tedrow securing the golden goal for the Aggies to give UC Davis their first win of 2023.
