Aggies Set to Host Seattle for Home Opener

DAVIS, Calif. – UC Davis men's soccer looks to stay perfect in its home opener on Sept. 3 at Aggie Soccer Field, hosting Seattle University.

NATIONAL RECOGNITION
UC Davis received six votes in the most recent national rankings by the United Soccer Coaches. This comes off the back of an extraordinary start to the season that saw the Aggies defeat Dayton and Ohio State.

Charles Janssen was named to the College Soccer News National Team of the Week following his incredible goalkeeping display during the opening weekend. Against Ohio State, he was likely the man of the match after his sparkling display between the posts. His six saves were vital in the effort to maintain the lead, flashing a couple tremendous saves in the closing minutes to keep the hosts at bay. The redshirt junior also unbelievably provided an assist for the game-winning goal, launching a beautiful goal kick to spark an attack.
 
A CLEAN SWEEP
After a spectacular weekend that saw UC Davis earn two victories over Dayton and Ohio State to the start the season, the Aggies have swept all three Big West weekly awards.
 
Cason Goodman was named Offensive Player of the Week after he led his team from the front, netting both game-winning goals in the opening weekend. Earning Defensive Player of the Week recognition UC Davis' man in goal, Charles Janssen. The goalkeeper was nothing short of excellent in the first two matches of the year, racking up 10 saves, denying a multitude of dangerous scoring chances throughout the weekend. Tristan Wouters enjoys a wonderful start to his collegiate career by earning Freshman of the Week honors. He bagged his first collegiate goal in the win over Ohio State as the freshman winger wreaked havoc on the left wing for the duration of the weekend.
 
THE PERFECT START
The Aggies made it two wins in two games to start their 2023 campaign, earning a pair of victories on the opening weekend. UC Davis picked up a convincing 2-0 win over Dayton in the first match of the year before concluding the weekend with a marquee victory over Ohio State, edging out the Buckeyes 2-1 on their home turf. Cason Goodman netted a goal in each game while standout freshman Tristan Wouters bagged his first collegiate goal. Charles Janssen was a brick wall between the posts, making 10 saves over the two contests. He even managed to get involved in the attack by providing an assist for the winning goal against Ohio State.
 
HOME SWEET HOME
UC Davis returns to Aggie Soccer Field for its first home match of the season, hosting Seattle University. The Aggies were 2-3-3 on home soil a season ago and will look to improve their home record in 2023.
 
SERIES NOTES
Saturday's matchup will mark the ninth meeting between UC Davis and Seattle, with the Redhawks leading the all-time series 4-3-1. The WAC members have won the last two contests, taking the most recent game 3-1 in 2021. The Aggies will be looking for their first win over Seattle since 2013.
 
GOODMAN AT THE DOUBLE
Cason Goodman enjoyed the perfect start to his 2023 season by scoring a goal in each of UC Davis' opening two matches. He fired in the opening goal against Dayton before tucking home the winner in the victory over Ohio State.
 
LEADING FROM THE FRONT
UC Davis' leading goal-scorer from a year ago, Ethan Hoard, has been named to the 2023 Big West Men's Soccer Preseason Coaches' team, announced Thursday by league officials.

The 2022 All-Big West Honorable Mention impressed in his debut season with the Aggies after transferring in from Green Bay. Hoard netted three goals, a team-high, while creating two assists during the campaign. He also matched a team-best eight points while leading the team in shots (39) and shots on target (18). The Racine, Wisc. native started 16 of 18 matches last season and provided some exciting moments, including his winning goal in the 2-1 victory over Causeway rivals Sacramento State
