Davis, Calif. — A strong showing during day one of the Gene Miranda Invitational has UC Davis in sole possession of 6th place in an ultra-competitive field of 24 teams.
With other teams battling weather issues later on in the day, the early tee-time allowed for the Aggies to get through their round uninterrupted.
UC Davis as a team was consistent throughout the entire lineup and was only +5 on the lengthy 7,541 yard Eisenhower Golf Course.
Leading the charge was freshman Treed Huang, behind his four birdies. During holes 6-8, Huang recorded three straight birdies and capped off his even for par round with a birdie on the 18th.
Another freshman paced UC Davis with Leo Metzger shooting +1 with four birdies to match Huang. An electric start to his young career, Metzger continues to build upon his historic hole-in-one on a par 4 last weekend.
The veteran trio of Mark Stephens, Lucas Carper and Jacob Westberg were rock solid for the Aggies as well. Stephens has been the most consistent Aggie so far and continued his standout play, shooting just two-over-par.
Westberg along with Stephens also finished the day at two-over-par. After an early double-bogey on the second hole, Westberg completely flipped his round around on the back-nine, rattling off three birdies to bring momentum into his second round tomorrow.
Carper rounded out the Aggie lineup, shooting a +4 with his best hole coming on the 610 yard, par 5, a hole in which he birdied.
Individually Logan Green and Alejandro Nava were competing on the Silver Course. Green is currently in 6th place after his round of 70, while Nava's score of 74 has him right in the middle of the pack heading into tomorrow.
Play will continue tomorrow as the Aggies look to build upon their strong start. Stats can be followed live on Golf Stat.
