Davis, Calif. — The Aggies scored late in Friday night's (Sept. 1) matchup against No. 4 ranked Michigan but were unable to come out on top, falling to the Wolverines 5-1.
In what was the first road game of the season for UC Davis, the Aggies had their hands full in Ann Arbor playing in front of nearly 500 Michigan fans.
Entering the season with high expectations the Wolverines who began their season with two losses in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge were keen on making a statement against the visiting Aggies.
As a result, UC Davis opened the game at 8-1 shot deficit in the first period of play. This would lead to two early goals for the Wolverines coming from Esmee de Willigen, and Alana Richardson.
In the second period, UC Davis stood tall on the defensive end, not allowing a goal despite five penalty corner attempts from the opposition. Along with the Aggie backline playing a role in trying to limit the Wolverine attack,
Sarah Lopez had another busy day, picking up 11 saves after facing a total of 31 shots.
Lopez currently ranks first in the America East in saves per game, and total saves.
Within striking distance, just trailing 2-0 as the game entered the halfway point, Michigan would end up scoring three more goals to take the 5-0 lead.
Before final time was reached, UC Davis'
Caroline Stutte picked up her first goal of the season in the 59th minute, eliminating the chance of a Michigan shutout, bringing the score to 5-1.
The loss brings UC Davis to 0-4 on the season with two more road contests during their East Coast trip.
