Davis, Calif. — In the 37th minute against Miami, Audrey Lee scored the first Aggies goal of 2023, with Shannon Lackey and Lizzy Tedrow receiving assists. The Aggies would however fall, losing a nail-biting game to the visiting RedHawks, 2-1.
A quick turnaround after playing the season opening match yesterday against Rutgers, the Aggies were welcomed with a quick RedHawks goal in the first period of play. Much of the success in the first for Miami was attributed to their presence on penalty corners, registering three in the first 15 minutes of action.
Entering the next period, UC Davis did a much better job of limiting the RedHawks attack, and got on the attack themselves, as Skylar Richards tallied the first shot for UC Davis in the opening seconds of the period.
The look from Richards was the lone attempt in the second, as the period would end in a stalemate with the Aggies trailing by one entering the final 30 minutes.
Making proper adjustments in the second half, UC Davis reaped the benefits, picking up their first goal of 2023. The aforementioned Aubrey Lee snuck one past Miami's Isabelle Perese, and tied the game at one a piece.
The celebration was put on hold to begin the fourth period after Miami scored a goal just seconds into the final 15 minutes of action.
With a 2-1 lead, Miami would hold on and come away with the victory.
Sarah Lopez in goal for the Aggies had another strong performance, collecting six saves after having five in yesterday's contest.
After competing yesterday against Rutgers, and going toe-to-toe with Miami this afternoon, UC Davis can take a lot of positives from their first two games.
Against two ranked opponents, the Aggies showed composure, the ability to make adjustments on the fly, and a cohesiveness that shows huge growth in Austin Pile's second full year on the sideline.
