Davis, Calif — UC Davis women's soccer dropped their first game of the season, falling to St. Mary's 1-0 Thursday afternoon.
Pacing the game with 11 shots, the Aggies were unable to find the back of the net as Taylor Poland of St. Mary's registered six saves in goal.
The Aggies drop to 2-1 on the season and will have a chance to respond on Sunday, August 27 as the Aggies travel down to San Francisco to take on the Dons at 4:00 p.m. PT.
UC Davis was able to manufacture scoring opportunities throughout the match as seen in their 6-1 differential of shots on goal. Their best opportunity may have come in the 24th minute when UC Davis fired three shots, all on target within a few seconds of each other.
The sequence started with Sammie Ruelas who nearly had her first goal of the season, just barely missing the top left corner. She was followed up with an opportunity from Sam Tristan, who had her initial shot saved, and then Risa Yamada had another close look at it off the rebound before the ball ended up in the hands of St. Mary's Poland.
Six Aggies registered shots in the contest, with Yamada, Tristan, Ruelas, Leslie Fregoso, and Sarah Canavan all having two a piece.
After being knotted up at 0-0 entering the half, it didn't take long for the Gaels to get on the board.
St. Mary's goal came from Emily Jensen who was set up by Tessa Salvestrin in the 56th minute.
Despite the loss, UC Davis has still outproduced their opponents, 8-1, and will look to get a bounce-back win with another WCC opponent looming.
