Davis, Calif. — UC Davis women's soccer got back in the win column Sunday evening, defeating San Francisco 3-1 at Negoesco Stadium.
The Aggies improve to 3-1 on the season following the win, while the Dons drop to 0-3.
Action on the hilltop started with a Sarah Canavan goal in the 30th minute. Initiated by a Caeley Goldstein goal kick, Goldstein's ball would find its way to Leslie Fregoso who would eventually play it through to Canavan, where the redshirt-sophomore from Capitola finished it off with her right foot, finding the top right corner of the goal.
The Aggies entered the half with a 1-0 lead, and much of that can be attributed to Goldstein's effort in goal. Fresh off of earning Big West Defensive Player of the Week, Goldstein looked the part in San Francisco, registering six saves in the game.
Asserting their dominance early, the Aggies would continue this trend in the second half. In the 48th minute,
Elise Picard notched her first career collegiate goal off a perfectly executed set piece which was triggered by
Bella Mayo.
With a 2-0 lead, it seemed like the Aggies were on their way to another shutout victory but the Dons would not go away quietly, scoring in the 77th minute.
Bringing the game within just one goal, UC Davis would not allow that goal to affect them, instead the Aggies responded just seconds later, scoring in the 78th minute, again on another executed set piece.
Risa Yamada was able to tally her second goal of the season with
Bella Mayo and
Leslie Fregoso, again earning assists.
With the two assists today, Fregoso moves to second all-time among Aggies for most assists in a career during the Division I era.
Holding a commanding 3-1 lead late in the game, the Aggies would deny any chance of a late Dons comeback and secure the victory in San Francisco.
