DAVIS, Calif. — Ashley Brewer's first UC Davis goal was also the lone score of the match in the Aggies' 1-0 victory over Pacific (0-6-0) in a nonconference tilt Sunday night at Aggie Soccer Field. Brewer curled her game-winner from near the top of the penalty box just inside the right goalpost and out of the reach of Tigers' goalkeeper Ava Wells.
Courtney Wagner and Jaycee DeFazio were each credited with their first assists of the season on Brewer's goal. All three players started their collegiate careers at Cal Poly before transferring to UC Davis.
"It was a fantastic goal - the setup with it, the combination play," head coach Kat Mertz said after the match. "We've been working on some of those plays at the top of the box."
"I'm just really happy that we were able to get our first win at home," Brewer added. "It came from all of the team's work to get the ball in the box, and it felt great to finally capitalize on that."
Both teams got up their share of shots with UC Davis outshooting Pacific, 12-9, but there were not many other scoring chances for either team although each side did have one shot off the top post early in the contest with Pacific's Janelli Villagran in the ninth minute followed by UC Davis' Lakelee Perkins in the 14th. UC Davis won the shots on goal battle, 4-2.
Piper Wilkison picked her first collegiate victory and solo shutout. She finished with two saves.
"I'll take a shutout any day of the week," Mertz said.
UC Davis will next be in action at LMU (1-4) on Thursday. The match will kick off at 4 p.m. PT and be streamed live on ESPN+.
"Moving forward into LMU, we've got to rest up a little bit, get healthy a little bit, and just take this momentum," Mertz said. "Every game I feel like we're doing just a little bit better. I use this analogy a lot. We're now into third gear. We're moving in the right direction. I'm happy."
After another road match at Portland the following Thursday, Sept. 17 (6 p.m., ESPN+), the Aggies next return home to host Idaho on Sunday, Sept. 20 (1 p.m., MW+).
