Hot-Shooting Aggies Take Down St. Mary's

DAVIS, Calif -- Evanne Turner poured in a season-high 23 points to power UC Davis to its second straight victory, taking down St. Mary's 87-66 in a convincing win on Sunday afternoon inside the University Credit Union Center.

It was the best offensive display of the year for Davis' team as it posted its highest team field goal percentage of the season at 55% while shooting 41% (12-of-29) from deep.

All five of the UC Davis starters reached double figures with Turner leading the way, racking up 23 points on an incredible 8-of-10 shooting while making five of her seven attempts from beyond the arc. In the process, Turner ascended to seventh on the UC Davis all-time scoring list, passing Alyson Doherty. The Fontana native has 1,322 points for her career and will look to further climb the ranks as sixth-place Paige Mintun is in her sights with 1,382 career points.

Tova Sabel impressed with her 16 points and four triples for her seventh double-digit performance of the year.

Delivering a great all-around performance was Sydney Burns who tallied a season-high 14 points with five boards and five assists. Megan Norris grabbed six rebounds to go along with her 11 points while Mazatlan Harris enjoyed her first game in double figures with 10 points. The San Diego native also pulled down a game-high seven rebounds in the contest.

How It Happened
The Aggies got started by finding Norris inside for a layup to open the scoring in the early minutes. Turner got her team in rhythm by burying her first shot from the perimeter to even the score at 7-7 just before the media timeout.

Coming out of the media timeout, Turner knocked down her second three to give the Aggies their first lead of the contest. This allowed UC Davis to start clicking offensively as Campbell Gray found a cutting Harris for an easy layup to make it a 7-0 run and further extend the advantage. The Aggies closed the period on a 12-3 run behind Turner's eight first-quarter points to build a 19-13 advantage after one.

The Fontana native quickly reached double-digits with a tough bucket in paint to build some separation in the second quarter. Turner became the creator on the following possession when she delivered a well-timed pass to Norris for another easy layup. Sydney Burns capped off a 10-0 run by scoring five straight points, pushing the lead to double-digits while reaching double figures herself.

St. Mary's would respond, however, rallying for a 7-0 run to give the visiting bench some life. Sabel restored the Aggies momentum with her second triple of the first half before Turner sunk her third three-pointer, making it a 39-26 lead at the break. UC Davis shot the ball very efficiently in the first 20 minutes, shooting 54% (14-of-26).

Turner continued to have the hot hand in the third period when she finished a brilliant spinning layup before stepping to the outside to hit her fourth shot from three-point range. Back-to-back layups from Sabel forced a timeout from the Gaels' head coach after UC Davis made it a 48-32 lead early in the third quarter.

Harris drilled a three and Norris completed a three-point play as the Aggies posted a 10-0 run in just over two minutes to increase the lead above the 20-point mark. UC Davis went 8-of-13 (61.5%) in a brilliant third-quarter shooting display to take a 65-46 lead into the final 10 minutes.

The Aggies started well in the fourth quarter when Turner and Harris poured in a couple threes to put their team out of sight as UC Davis would cruise to the 87-66 win to make it two straight victories.
