STANFORD, Calif. – UC Davis wrapped up its nonconference schedule with a tough matchup against No. 9 Stanford and the nationally-ranked Cardinal prevailed with a 92-52 win on Wednesday afternoon inside Maples Pavilion.
UC Davis (4-6) had trouble stopping the talented Cardinal who shot 57.6% from the floor and 50% from three-point range in the contest. Stanford also proved to be quite dominant on the glass, out-rebounding the Aggies 39-27.
Evanne Turner enjoyed a decent performance, knocking down three triples on her way to her team-high 17 points.
Tova Sabel also reached double-digits with 12 points on the day, also hitting three shots from deep, while Sydney Burns chipped in with eight points from the point guard position.
How It Happened
Burns tallied the first points of the contest with her mid-range jumper before she came up with a steal and a layup on the next possession to keep things close in the early minutes. However, Stanford would start to show its class with a quick burst to take a double-digit lead and force a UC Davis timeout.
Knocking down her first three of the day was Sabel, pulling up in a defender's face to get her name on the scoresheet. She quickly made it back-to-back three-pointers, but the Cardinal would shoot over 50% in the opening 10 minutes to take a 34-15 lead after one.
The hosts extended its lead beyond 20 beyond in the second quarter despite Sabel's third three-ball finding the bottom of the net. The Aggies would then have to endure a tough stretch, a scoring drought that persisted over six minutes while Stanford rallied for an 18-0 run. This ultimately resulted in a 60-25 advantage in favor of the Cardinal when the whistle blew for halftime. It was a hot-shooting period for Stanford, going 11-of-15 (73.3%) to out-score UC Davis 26-10 in the second quarter.
Bria Shine got involved by burying a triple early in the third quarter, but Stanford would continue its dominance by pushing its advantage above the 40-point mark.
The Aggies started the fourth quarter on a 7-0 run behind Turner's second shot from beyond the arc. The Fontana native hit another three to spark her eight-point quarter.
UC Davis was unable to cut further into the deficit by the end of the game, falling 92-52.
