BOISE, Idaho -- Evanne Turner and Tova Sabel combined to score 33 total points, but the Aggies fell to the Boise State Broncos 70-53 on the road Wednesday.
Turner reached yet another milestone after her team-high 17 points on Wednesday night, passing both Ellen Porshneva and Aimee Conner to move up to number eight on the UC Davis all-time scoring list. She now has 1,263 points for her career and now has seventh-place Alyson Doherty in her sights, who scored 1,308 points from 2012-2016.
Turner made three triples in the game while Sabel knocked down four of her eight attempts from beyond the arc to total 16 points on the night.
Sydney Burns racked up seven points while dishing out three assists while Megan Norris and Mazatlan Harris chipped in with six points apiece.
UC Davis forced 17 Boise State turnovers. The Aggies turned those takeaways into 13 points on the other end of the floor.
How It Happened
Offense was hard to come by for both teams in the early minutes of the first period as the squads were a combined 2-for-14 from the field at the first media timeout. Boise State took advantage, however, opening up the contest on a 14-0 run. UC Davis struggled to find rhythm - going over six minutes without scoring – until Sabel finally nailed a three-pointer to get her team on the board.
The Swedish guard buried another three to cut into the deficit, sparking an 11-1 run for the Aggies. Despite the late run, the Broncos held a 15-11 lead after 10 minutes.
Sydney Burns got UC Davis started with her layup to whittle the Boise State lead to just two points but the hosts would rally for an 8-0 run to restore their sizable advantage. A huge response would come from the sharpshooting Sabel who fired the Aggies back in the contest with her back-to-back triples in the last two minutes, closing the gap to 29-26 at the break.
The Aggies immediately tied things up on their first possession of the second half when Megan Norris stepped out to the perimeter to knock down a three, scoring her first points of the game. Burns tallied five points in the third quarter and Turner hit her second three of the night to keep the Aggies hanging around as they would trail by just six (48-42) going into the final period.
Boise State created some separation with a 6-0 run to start the fourth quarter, making back-to-back three-points to force a UC Davis timeout. The Aggies were unable to recover as the hosts out-scored UC Davis 22-11 in the last 10 minutes to seal the 70-53 victory and improve to 3-2 in the all-time series.
