SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Megan Norris exploded for a career-high 21 points to lead UC Davis past its Causeway rivals, Sacramento State, Tuesday night inside the Nest.
The Aggies (2-3) were firing on all cylinders, shooting 50.8% as a team with 22 assists on 30 made field goals in the 79-67 win over the Hornets. Norris had undoubtedly the best night of her collegiate career, racking up 21 points on 9-of-11 shooting while grabbing a team-high eight boards.
Evanne Turner made history once again, scoring 16 points to place herself in the top 10 all-time on the UC Davis women's basketball scoring list. With 1,246 points in her career, she passes her head coach Jennifer Gross to ascend to 10th on the list.
Tova Sabel hit four three-pointers and enjoyed a big second half to finish with 18 points on the night.
The Aggies' defense was solid, holding Sacramento State shooters to only 39.2% from the field while forcing 20 turnovers.
How It Happened
Some nifty ball movement led to the first bucket of the game as Lena Svanholm found Norris underneath the basket for the first score of the game. Norris continued her solid start to the contest by finishing off a tough layup inside with some contact for a three-point play. The hosts would hang around, however, starting the game 4-of-5 from the field to pull within two (11-9) at the first media timeout.
Norrs was on fire in the opening 10 minutes, going a perfect 5-for-5 from the floor and punctuating it with a jumper at the buzzer to total 11 points in the quarter to power the Aggies to an 20-11 lead.
Perfection continued in the second quarter for Norris as she netted a hook shot to make it 6-for-6 from the floor for the Menlo Park native. The rout began when trio of three-pointers from
Victoria Baker, Turner, and
Tova Sabel sparked a 26-0 run that carried over from the first quarter. The Aggie defense was excellent, holding the Hornets without a field goal for over six minutes while forcing six turnovers. UC Davis was extremely efficient as it made 10 of its 16 attempts, nailing 4-of-8 shots from beyond the arc to out-score Sacramento State 24-13 in the second quarter.
This allowed Davis' team to extend its advantage to 44-24 at the break, their largest halftime lead since the season opener against Academy of Art.
Svanholm opened the third-quarter scoring by hitting a shot from deep and Sabel started to find some rhythm by scoring five consecutive points. Norris stepped out to the perimeter to bury a three-ball, giving herself 18 points on the night and pushing the lead to 62-35 at the three-minute mark in the third frame. Sabel tallied eight points in the period to give the Aggies a 63-41 lead heading into the last 10 minutes.
The Aggies would cruise the rest of the way, trading buckets with the Hornets to earn the 79-57 win in the capital city.
