Aggies Edged by Aztecs in San Diego

SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- UC Davis rallied from behind to take a fourth-quarter lead on Monday night at San Diego State, but the Aztecs would out-score the Aggies 26-13 in the final period to take the contest 77-68.

The Aggies (1-2) had four players score in double figures, led by Evanne Turner, who had 16 points and nine rebounds. Tova Sabel tacked on 16 points and six rebounds and Megan Norris helped out with 13 points, nine rebounds and two steals.

Sydney Burns enjoyed a fantastic game at the point guard position, finishing just one assist shy of a double-double, pouring in 12 points while handing out a career-high nine assists.

UC Davis collected 38 rebounds compared to San Diego State's 37, led by Norris' nine boards.

The Aggies scored 48 points in the paint and couldn't quite find the shooting touch from beyond the arc, going just 5-of-21 from three-point range.

How It Happened
The hosts opened the contest on a quick 5-0 run before Turner ended UC Davis' early scoring drought by burying a corner three. Sabel erased the deficit by converting a tough layup and the Aggies would begin to find some offensive rhythm.

Norris poured in four consecutive points and Mazatlan Harris would get her name on the scoresheet before Sabel continued her hot streak by exploding for nine points in the first 10 minutes. Despite shooting 56% (9-of-16), the Aggies would trail 24-21 after one.

Turner got the Ags on the board to start the second quarter with a strong drive to basket before knocking down a tough turnaround jumper. However, the Aztecs would extend their lead to eight, forcing a UC Davis timeout. Burns sparked the Aggies' response coming out of the timeout, finding Harris and Turner with some well-timed passes for two of her five first-half assists before making a layup in transition to cut the lead to two.

UC Davis made five of its last six field goal attempts, but San Diego State retained its 39-35 advantage at the half.

The Aggies took the third quarter by storm, taking the lead following a 9-0 run behind Turner's second three-ball of the night. Burns continued to facilitate the offense at a high level, delivering a perfect bounce pass to hit Turner in stride on her backdoor cut for another easy layup, extending the Aggies' lead to six while tallying her eighth assist of the night.

Turner racked up seven points in the third quarter to power her team to the 55-51 heading into the final period. The Aggies' defense was suffocating, holding the Aztecs to just 3-of-16 in the quarter to take a commanding lead.

Sabel found the bottom of the net from three-point range to get UC Davis going in the fourth quarter. A huge 'and-one' from Norris made it an eight-point lead for Davis' team as the center reached double-digits for the night. San Diego State would respond, however, rallying for an 20-5 run in the last six minutes to take a lead it would not surrender.

The offense sputtered at the wrong time for the Aggies who tallied just five points in the quarter while going 4-of-17 from the floor. This allowed the Aztecs back into the game, eventually escaping with the 75-68 win.
