IRVINE, Calif. – Lucas Fernandez-Kim's second-half goal gave UC Davis the edge it needed to secure all three points in a 1-0 win over hosts UC Irvine on Saturday night.
It was a cagey affair at Anteater Stadium as neither team truly dominated possession in the contest. The teams were nearly equal in the shot column with UCI holding a slight 9-8 advantage, placing three efforts on target while UC Davis tallied two.
Fernandez-Kim's 61
st minute goal proved to be the winning moment, finishing off a brilliant attacking move.
Cole Pond played a good ball into
Cason Goodman on the left wing, who whipped in a wonderful cross across the top of the penalty area. The midfielder took a good first touch and shifted the ball onto his right foot before hitting his shot across goal and into the bottom corner to net his first career goal.
It was another fantastic defensive performance as the backline of
Luke Goodman,
Ethan Hoard,
Sean Bilter, and Pond played all 90 minutes to preserve the team's fourth clean sheet of the year.
Charles Janssen was solid between the posts, coming up with three crucial saves in the goalkeeper's third shutout.
