DAVIS, Calif. – UC Davis netted the opening goal but CSUN hit back for a second-half equalizer as points would be shared on Wednesday afternoon following the 1-1 draw at Aggie Soccer Field.
The Aggies move into joint second in the conference table as they are now level on points (7) with Cal State Bakersfield, UC Santa Barbara, and Cal Poly, however, all three teams have a game in hand. CSUN remains at the bottom of the table with just two points during their campaign.
It was a fairly even contest that didn't feature many scoring chances at either end. UC Davis held a slight edge in the shots column (8-6), but only placed four attempts on frame. The final ball was the lacking piece for the Aggies, who progressed the play well from the back.
Zack Lillington gave the hosts the lead in the 32
nd minute with his second goal of the season, firing a thunderous shot across goal to find the bottom corner.
Andrew Dutra fizzed a ball into the feet of Lillington with his back to goal, who did well to control a difficult ball to handle. The Fairfax native spun onto his right foot and smashed the chance home to give the Aggies an early advantage.
Despite the early goal, UC Davis would go without a shot for the remainder of the half and took a one-goal lead into the break.
Ryan Dieter nearly doubled the advantage in the 57
th minute when his left-footed strike forced the CSUN goalkeeper to tip his shot over the bar. Less than five minutes later, the Matadors brought it back to level pegging when Jamar Ricketts finished off Michael Arrington's cross from point blank range, scoring the goal that would rescue a point for the visitors.
Neither team could muster more than a half chance in the dying minutes and each team would leave the pitch with a point.
