Lowell, Mass. — Lizzy Tedrow tallied the lone goal for her side, as the UC Davis field hockey team (2-13, 1-6 AE) fell to No. 18 ranked UMass Lowell, 5-1 on Friday.
In what lined up to be the seventh matchup for the Aggies against a nationally ranked opponent this season, the squad battled the whole way, keeping it closely contested throughout. A strong start defensively saw the Aggies hold the River Hawks to just three shots and no goals in the first period.
This would immediately be a different story in the second period with the River Hawks settling into their home environment, recording 10 shots and scoring three goals within the span of six minutes.
The River Hawks opened the scoring when Madison Leeper capitalized on a miscue by the Aggies defense, leading to an early one-on-one situation. Two minutes later, Ava Clarke doubled the lead with a last-second tip off a pass from Berbel Rozema. Clarke scored again in the second period, knocking in a rebound after a save by Aggies goalie
Sarah Lopez.
UMass Lowell continued to press in the third period, adding a goal from Meike Vischer, who redirected a centering pass from Isabelle Halters. Vischer would find herself on the scoring ledger again in the fourth period, this time getting a redirect by the post to find the back of the net.
The Aggies got on the board in the fourth period as well, when
Lizzy Tedrow converted a penalty stroke for her sixth goal of the season.
The River Hawks outshot the Aggies 28-3, with 15 shots on target.
Despite the loss, the Aggies showed resilience and determination against another top-ranked opponent.
