Nava among top-10 individuals as Aggies kick off Windon Memorial

Skokie, ILL. — UC Davis Men's Golf finds themselves in 11th place after two rounds of play on day one at the Windon Memorial. Taking place at the Par 70 Evanston Golf Club with Northwestern University hosting, The Aggies are 25-over-par as schools look to chase down the leading Kent State Golden Flashes who sit at 4-under-par.

During the first round of 18, the Aggies as a unit shot a 294 (+14), while recording a 291 (+11) during the second round of 18. The team stats show the Aggies were able to pick up 114 pars, 15 birdies, and were one of six teams to record an eagle on the day.

Rolling out a lineup of Lucas Carper, Darren Chiu, Mark Stephens, Alejandro Nava, and Jacob Westberg, it was Nava who led the Aggies today after putting together a round one score of 71 (+1) along with another impressive round 2 score of 69 (-1).

Nava paced the Aggies and is tied for 10th among all competitors after finishing with a two round total of 140 (E). Nava's performance on day one could be summed up by consistent pars, and dominance on par 4's. Nava put together five birdies and the consistent pars limited his bogey efforts throughout the entire day. Nava goes into day two, firmly in the mix and on the hunt to leapfrog a few opponents ahead of him who all are chasing North Florida's Robbie Higgins who has shot a blistering 8-under-par through 36.

Jacob Westberg ended day one with a total score of 147 (+7). During the first 18 holes of golf for Westberg, he was able to collect one birdie en route to a 72, 2-over-par performance. Westberg would collect one more birdie on the day during his second round and would find success on the limited amount of Par 5's Evanston GC has to offer. Westberg is currently tied for 54th on the leaderboard heading into day two.

Darren Chiu and Mark Stephens capped off day one with total round scores of 149 (+9) and are tied for 61st among all golfers. Chiu's day was highlighted by the brilliant play his brilliant play on Evanston GC's 507 yard par 5, as he was able to record one of only seven eagles on the day between all competitors. Stephens produced four birdie efforts on the course today, most notably, recording back to back birdies on holes four and five in his first round.

Carper rounded out the Aggie lineup and was able to secure a birdie on hole eight during his second round of 18. Carper is tied for 73rd place and will look to climb up the leaderboard during the final round tomorrow.

Play continues tomorrow with the Aggies teeing off roughly at 8:33AM CDT. You can follow along with the rest of the tournament on GolfStat.
