UC Davis Women's Basketball adds three transfers

Baker, Sabel and Sussman to join Aggies for 2022-23 season

Davis, Calif. – UC Davis women's basketball head coach Jennifer Gross has announced the addition of three transfers for the upcoming 2022-2023 season in Victoria Baker, Tova Sabel and Tess Sussman.

"We are really excited to add Victoria, Tova, and Tess to our team this season," Gross said. "They are all highly skilled players, great students, and most importantly, incredible people who will fit in well with the team culture we have built here at UC Davis. We can't wait for our Aggie fans to watch them compete!"

Baker, a transfer from UC Irvine, has four years of eligibility remaining.

A 5'9" combo guard from Austin, Texas, Baker played one season for the Anteaters, appearing in all 24 games as a freshman during the 2020-21 season and averaging 5.0 points, 2.1 rebounds and 3.1 assists per game.

"Victoria is a scoring guard who will add depth to our backcourt," Gross said. "She is a high energy player who can shoot the three as well as finish at the rim."

During her freshman season, Baker posted 12 points while dishing out a season-high six assists in a Big West quarterfinal win over UC Santa Barbara. Baker registered one of her best shooting performances of her college career, collecting a season-best 17 points en route to a road victory over UC San Diego.

"She is a terrific playmaker and a crafty passer who loves to set up her teammates," Gross said. "Victoria is a gritty defender who makes lots of hustle plays and will help us with our goal of being an elite defensive team."

Before UC Irvine, Baker lettered three years at Vista Ridge High School in Cedar Park, Texas. She also was a 2020 McDonald's All-American Game nominee following her 2019-20 season where she averaged 12.6 points, 4.0 rebounds and 3.1 steals per game.

Sabel, a transfer from Penn State, has three years of eligibility remaining.

Sabel, a 5'10" guard out of Stockholm, Sweden, played two seasons for the Nittany Lions, appearing in all 24 games as a freshman in 2020-21 and 26 games during the 2021-22 season.

"Tova brings size and physicality to the guard position," Gross said. "She is a talented scorer who can get in the paint or stretch the defense with her 3-pt shot. Tova's size and versatility will make her a difficult match-up in our offensive system."

As a freshman, she shot 45.7 percent from the field and 45.8 percent from 3-point range while averaging five points and 2.1 rebounds per game. She increased her total steals from nine as a freshman to 19 in 2021-22 while also lowering her turnover count in her sophomore season.

Sabel joins an Aggie program with a strong tradition of developing and mentoring international players, a list that includes Aggie luminaries such as Sage Stobbart, Dani Nafekh, and Mackenzie Trpcic. Sabel will be one of three European players to suit up for the Aggies next season, joining Megan Jones and Lena Svahholm.

Prior to her time at Penn State, Sabel was a four-year member of the Swedish National Team and was named the Most Valuable Player of the U19 European League in 2019. She guided her Alvik Basket team to a 2020 Swedish Cup Championship and was a voted team MVP five times.

"Her experience with both the Swedish National team and playing in the Big 10 will be great as she looks to immediately impact our team," Gross said.

She made a quick splash in her collegiate debut, scoring 14 points with five rebounds and six assists against Coppin State on Nov. 25, 2020, and went on to score in double figures four times in her freshman season. She set her career-high of 19 points last season on Feb. 27 against Minnesota, going 7-8 from the field.

Sussman, a graduate transfer from Harvard, has one year of eligibility remaining.

A 5'11'' forward from Needham, Massachusetts, Sussman played three seasons with the Crimson. As one of two Harvard captains for the 2021-22 campaign, Sussman averaged 8.3 points per game.

"Tess is a tremendous leader who brings a great deal of experience to our team," Gross said. "She is an elite communicator which will help us a lot on offense and defense. Tess has a knack for making plays and brings a lot of intangibles to the court. She had a terrific career at Harvard, utilizing her versatility, perimeter shooting, and team defense to help the team see much success."

Named to the 2021-22 Academic All-Ivy Team, Sussman put up single-game career highs in points (25), FGs made (10), FG attempts (13), and steals (6) during her senior season. Sussman produced her personal-best 25-point performance on March 4, 2022, at Dartmouth where she drained five three-pointers to secure the road victory.

Prior to Harvard, Sussman played basketball for four years at The Rivers School.

Sussman recently won gold medal while guiding Team USA at the 2022 Maccabiah Games in Israel.
