DAVIS, Calif. – UC Davis senior
Marlene Gutierrez set the tone for the day with two individual titles to help lead the Aggie women to a first day lead at the Big West Conference Championship. UC Davis amassed 45 points Friday at Woody Wilson Track and Toomey Field.
Gutierrez shattered the school record in the hammer by more than five feet by launching a mark of 198-8 (60.57m) to win the first event of the day for the Ags. The senior then came back and won the shot put title with a mark of 49-5 (15.06m).
Ashpreet Kler also scored a point in the hammer with a throw of 164-1 (50.01m).
Marin Chamberlin also broke a school record, clearing 13-7 (4.14m) in the pole vault to earn runner-up honors. Miranda Miller of Cal State Bakersfield used a conference record clearance of 14-1.25 (4.30m) to claim the victory.
Katrina Meier and
Sydney McCann scored key points for the Aggies as Meier cleared 12-3.25 (3.74m) to place fifth and McCann followed with the same height to finish in sixth.
The Aggie women capped off a productive first day with key points in the 10,000m as Danielle Barrett clocked a 35:32.82 to place fourth and was closely followed by
Gillian Meeks, who crossed the line in fifth with a 35:35.33.
Advancing on the track to Saturday's final for the Ags:
Chloe Arriaga (4:31.36),
Brooke Starn (4:31.66),
Madison Kackley (4:29.82) and
Brianna Weidler (4:32.01) in the 1,500m;
Alexys Ford (57.81) in the 400m; and
Deja Ingram (12.21) in the 100m.
On the men's side, the Aggies are poised for a big Saturday, advancing several to the finals. The lone scorer for UC Davis came from
Austin Vasquez in the 10,000m with a time of 31:01.75 to finish fourth overall.

Matthew Okonkwo (47.22) in the 400m;
Max Glasser (21.31) and Okonkwo (21.45) in the 200m; Glasser (10.77),
Kurtis Lee (10.66) and Jared Jones (10.68) in the 100m;
Joey Monti (54.66) in the 400mH.
The final day of the championship will start with the men's hammer throw at 9 a.m. The action on the track will begin with the women's 4x100m relay at 1 p.m.
