NEWS & NOTABLES: A busy start to the spring for the UC Davis women's golf team sends the Aggies to the "Silver State" this week, taking on the field at The Show hosted by UNLV at Spanish Trail Country Club in Las Vegas. UC Davis is fresh off a 10th-place finish in its spring opener last week at The Valley Invitational in Bakersfield, Calif., as freshman Abby Leighton posted her first career collegiate top-five finish with an 8-over 224 to finish seven shots off the pace. Leighton tied her collegiate best with a 71 in the second round, carding an eagle and four birdies on the front nine.

NEWS & NOTABLES: It's championship season for the Aggies this week as UC Davis heads to Southern California for the 2022 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championships for the first time under Head Coach Matt Macedo. The swimming portion of this year's championships will be held at East Los Angeles College in Monterey Park, Calif., while the divers will compete for points at the Marguerite Aquatics Center in Mission Viejo, Calif. The Aggies are coming off a third-place finish at last year's conference championships, scoring 575 points to finish behind Hawai'i (794.5) and BYU (727.5). UC Davis has won four MPSF team titles (2011, 2013, 2014, and 2016), while posting runner-up finishes twice (2015, 2019).

NEWS & NOTABLES: Having not played since a three-point victory over first place Hawai'i on Feb. 5, the UC Davis men's basketball team will try and get one game in this week after its Thursday home contest against Cal Poly was canceled on Monday (Feb. 14) due to COVID health and safety protocols. The Aggies have had eight Big West Conference games canceled due to COVID protocols and have played only six contests in league this season -- the fewest of any Big West school during the 2021-22 campaign. Ezra Manjon (15.4 ppg) and Elijah Pepper (15.2 ppg) enter the week ranked fourth and fifth, respectively in the Big West in scoring, while standing among the top 10 in both field goal percentage and minutes.

NEWS & NOTABLES: The Aggies got back in the win column in a big way at home against two of the league's top teams, posting wins over UC San Diego and conference co-leader UC Irvine in their final February appearances at the University Credit Union Center. UC Davis now heads on the road for four straight beginning Thursday in San Luis Obispo, Calif., against Cal Poly before heading inland to take on CSU Bakersfield. Senior Cierra Hall put the Aggies on her back last week, averaging 20.0 ppg while shooting 10-for-16 (.625) from the field, 4-of-7 from three-point range, and 16-of-19 at the line, while also averaging 8.5 rebounds per game. With the win over UC Irvine last week, Head Coach Jennifer Gross notched her 112th career Big West win, moving her into sole possession of fifth on the league's all-time conference wins list, and her 197th career victory, just three shy of making her only the fifth head coach in Big West history to reach the milestone as a member of the league.
 
 
MEN'S TENNIS

NEWS & NOTABLES: The Aggies will once again hit the road during the week and then return home for matches on the weekend. UC Davis heads to San Francisco to face USF on Friday, Feb. 18 and then hosts Santa Clara and William Jessup on Saturday, Feb. 19. The Aggies are coming off an impressive weekend, winning all three of their matches. The weekend opened with a thrilling, 4-3, victory over rival Sacramento State to claim the Causeway Cup. UC Davis then handled Saint Mary's (6-1) and Holy Names (7-0).  Junior Andrei Volgin has won five straight completed matches.

NEWS & NOTABLES: The Tommy Nicholson Era begins this weekend as the UC Davis baseball team kicks off its 2022 season with a pair of games at home against Saint Mary's on Friday and Saturday, before heading to Moraga for the series finale on Sunday. The 11th head coach in the history of the program, Nicholson spent the previous four seasons as an assistant at Stanford before taking the reins of an Aggie program that finished 14-43 overall and 8-32 in Big West Conference play a season ago.

NEWS & NOTABLES: The UC Davis indoor track and field team will head to the MPSF Championships this weekend to begin its postseason schedule. In just two weekends of indoor action, the Aggies have been peppering the school's all-time top-10 list. Freshman Hope Bergmark posted the third-fastest time in school history with a 5k time of 16:41.73. Sophomore Kerrington Smith leaped to the fourth-best jump in the program's annals with a mark of 39-2.50 in the triple jump.
 
 
WOMEN'S WATER POLO

NEWS & NOTABLES: After a strong showing at the Triton Invitational last weekend, the UC Davis women's water polo team heads down Highway 99 for the day to take part in the Fresno State Invite on Saturday, taking on San Jose State and Indiana. The Aggies posted wins over Loyola Marymount and Big West rival UC San Diego while advancing to the tournament's fifth-place game. Junior Noelle Wijnbelt finished with a team-high five goals, while Emily Aikema finished with four goals and four assists for a team-high eight points in La Jolla. Defensively, Julia Hartmann swiped eight steals and drew 11 exclusions, while goalkeeper Sophia Noble finished with 27 saves in four starts in net.
 
 
SOFTBALL

NEWS & NOTABLES: The UC Davis softball team opened the 2022 season, hosting the NorCal Kickoff this past weekend. The Aggies boasted a 3-1 record, winning three straight, all by identical 4-1 scores. Sophomore Sarah Starks paced the offense, slugging .818 with a .364 batting average. Starks led the team with four hits and four RBI, including a triple and a two-run home run. The Aggies pitching staff held opponents to a .190 batting average and showcased a 0.75 team ERA. UC Davis hits the road for two weeks, beginning with a three-game set at Fresno State this weekend.

NEWS & NOTABLES: The UC Davis women's tennis team hits the road for a pair of Big West matches as they head south to face Cal Poly and UC Santa Barbara. The Aggies will face the Mustangs on Sunday, Feb. 20 and play on President's Day, on Monday, against the Gauchos. After dropping a close match against USF on Friday, UC Davis bounced back with two wins on Saturday. The Aggies blanked Holy Names, 7-0, and then downed Santa Clara, 5-2. Junior Yana Gurevich is riding a seven-match singles winning streak.

NEWS & NOTABLES: After a pair of tune-ups on the road, the UC Davis women's lacrosse team officially opens its 2022 campaign at home this weekend, welcoming former MPSF rival San Diego State to UC Davis Health Stadium on Sunday at Noon. After claiming the 2021 league title, Head Coach Suzanne Isidor enters her fifth year at the helm of the Aggie program, having led UC Davis to 32 victories -- including a 12-4 mark last season for its highest win total since the 2004 campaign. The Aggies return 20 letter winners and five starters off of last season's roster, welcoming 11 newcomers to the program for 2022.
 
 
WOMEN'S GYMNASTICS

NEWS & NOTABLES: The UC Davis gymnastics team will host Air Force, Alaska Anchorage and Texas Women's University on Sunday, Feb. 20. The meet will celebrate five seniors in Lauren Chu, Cortney Cunningham, Kyla Kessler, Gabby Landess and Shannon Sklow. The Aggies are coming off another victory over Sacramento State, eclipsing the 195-point total for the third straight weekend. UC Davis posted a season-best 48.875 as Kessler and freshman Megan Ray both hit 9.90s on the floor.
