Aggies Drop 68th Version of the Causeway Classic, 27-21

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Miles Hastings threw for 307 yards and C.J. Hutton churned out 102 receiving yards, but UC Davis fell to Sacramento State, 27-21, in front a record crowd in the 68th playing of the Causeway Classic.

The Hornets improved to 11-0 on the year and 8-0 in Big Sky Conference play, while the Aggies move to 6-5 overall and 5-3 in league play.

Hastings went 21-for-36 on the way to the 307-yard, one-touchdown outing at Hornet Stadium Saturday.

Senior running back Ulonzo Gilliam, Jr. totaled 50 yards to lead the Aggies ground attack and added one touchdown in the game. Lan Larison tacked on 34 yards on the ground, as well as 39 receiving yards.

Hutton's 102-yard performance led the UC Davis receiving corps. Josh Gale broke away for a 75-yard touchdown.

Rex Connors paced the UC Davis defense, recording 11 tackles and one interception. The interception was his fifth on the season.

UC Davis responded to an early 7-0 Sacramento State lead and kept chipping away all game long. After Sacramento State scored to expand its lead to 17-3, the Aggies got on the scoreboard again to close the gap and make it a 17-10 game.

UC Davis scored again with 9:39 left in the third quarter to narrow the deficit to 17-13. Sacramento State scored to expand its lead to 24-13 before the Aggies scored again to narrow the advantage and make it a 24-21 game. Gale provided the spark on the 75-yard touchdown.

The Aggies will now await their playoff fate tomorrow on the NCAA Selection Show that will air at 9:30 a.m. on ESPNU.

Game Notes
» The Aggies had three players with more than eight tackles in the ballgame led by a career-high 14 from Jayce Smalley.
» Rex Connors totaled double-digit tackles for the fifth time this season.
» The Aggies kept Hastings upright all game and didn't allow a sack.
» Hastings recorded his third game with more than 300-yards passing this season.
