River Hills, Wisconsin — The UC Davis men's golf team wrapped up the Marquette Intercollegiate with a 1-over-par, (281) performance to help shoot up the leaderboards on the final day of the tournament. The Marquette Intercollegiate marked the end of Fall Competition for the Aggies as the focus shifts toward Spring Competition that will resume during February.
After having the second round of play suspended due to darkness Sunday night, the Aggie lineup of
Lucas Carper,
Alejandro Nava,
Mark Stephens,
Darren Chiu, and
Jacob Westberg resumed action finishing up their last few holes before moving onto round three.
Mark Stephens finished his second round this morning 1-under-par as he carded a 69 through the course of two days. Even with the suspension of play, that didn't slow down the Aggie lineup at all as the trio of Stephens, Nava, and Westberg combined for 13 birdies on the second round alone.
The third and final round which kicked off shortly after all teams finished round two was where the Aggies found their stride. They finished round three with 15 birdies as a team and were once again led by
Lucas Carper who carded a 67, good for 3-under-par. Carper put together a standout showing during the first round, dealt with some up and down play during the night suspended second round, but bounced back with a stellar display of golf during his final Fall event of the season. During his 3-under-par round, Carper added four birdies, all of which came on par 4's, and limited himself to only one bogey. Carper finished in 5th place and will carry this momentum to the Spring Season.
After finding a groove in round two yesterday,
Mark Stephens continued his strong play as he shot even-par, while adding six birdies along the way. Stephens allowed the Aggies to climb up the leaderboards and will remain a key piece of the lineup that looks to repeat as Big West Champions.
Westberg, Nava, and Chiu also contributed to the Aggies rise on day two. Westberg compiled a 1-over-par on round three and rebounded from his round one score to finish tied for 52nd among the field. Chiu and Nava were able to notch two birdies a piece as Nava would finish the day 3-over par, earning a tied for 74th finish while Chiu was 4-over-par and finished the tournament tied for 63rd.
UC Davis will return back to action in the Spring as they visit Waimea, Hawai'i to take part in the Amer Ari Invitational.
