NORTHRIDGE, Calif. -- Few teams have been tasked with overcoming more adversity than UC Davis during the 2021-22 basketball season but this group is proving they have the mettle.
The Aggies pulled away late against the CSUN Matadors on Thursday night to post a 64-47 win in Northridge, their first conference win of the season.
The Aggies (8-5, 1-1) had four players score in double figures, led by Christian Anigwe, who had 16 points and eight rebounds. Ezra Manjon tacked on 14 points and two steals and Elijah Pepper and Caleb Fuller had 13 points apiece. Fuller also led UC Davis with a career-high nine assists and eight rebounds.
Six of Anigwe's rebounds came on the offensive end, giving up 15 offensive rebounds over UC Davis' last two games. The Aggies outrebounded CSUN 38-29 and turned 12 offensive rebounds into 15 second chance points, compared to six for the Matadors.
UC Davis turned the ball over just eight times and scored 16 points off 15 CSUN turnovers, the fourth straight game the Aggies have committed 10 or fewer turnovers.
After jumping out to a 6-4 advantage, UC Davis went on a 7-0 run with 15:57 left in the first half, puncuated by a three from Pepper, to increase its lead to 13-4. CSU Northridge responded to tie things up at 29-29 heading into halftime.
The Aggies used an 10-2 run just after the start of the half to go from tied at 33 to up 43-35, but CSUN later scored five straight to begin to mount a rally with 7:28 to go and get within 47-42. UC Davis responded with force though, outscoring the Matadors 17-3 over the rest of the game.
Thursday night's game marked the first UC Davis has been able to play consecutive games since Dec. 19 and 22 as the Aggies have been on the receiving end of more game cancelations than any other Big West team. With UC Santa Barbara forced to cancel Saturday's contest, the Aggies have now faced five canceled games with Thursday being just their second conference game of the season.
UC Davis will take the floor next against Cal State Fullerton at home on Jan. 27.
