Anigwe sets career highs but Aggies fall in San Luis Obispo

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - Christian Anigwe had a career night in San Luis Obispo on Saturday night but it wasn't enough to complete UC Davis' second half comeback as the Aggies fell 82-74 to Cal Poly.

The Aggies (7-5, 0-1) had four players score in double figures, led by Anigwe, who secured a double-double with 20 points and 13 rebounds, both career-highs. Elijah Pepper tacked on 16 points and two steals and Ezra Manjon added 16 points, seven rebounds and matched his career-high with eight assists. Kane Milling had a career-high 12 points, three rebounds and two assists to give UC Davis four in double-figures.

Of Anigwe's 13 boards, nine were offensive, a UC Davis Division I-era record.

Trailing 37-27 at the half, the Aggies did what they've done all season and came out of the locker room strong, at one point going on an 8-0 run to pull within 44-46 with 12:06 to go. Anigwe scored six straight during the run. After two free throws by the Mustangs, UC Davis went on a 6-2 run to tie the game at 52 with 8:26 to go. Cal Poly responded with a 10-1 run and though the Aggies pulled with 71-79 and 74-80 following threes by Milling, the Mustangs were able to maintain enough of a margin to pull away.

Saturday night's contest was just the second game since Dec. 22 for the Aggies, who have suffered more than any other team in the Big West Conference in terms of COVID-related cancelations. UC Davis had three games canceled prior to Jan. 8's 78-71 win over UC San Diego and then Jan. 13's road game at CSU Bakersfield was canceled due to issues within the Roadrunners' program. Saturday night was the Aggies' first conference game of the season.

The Aggies are in the midst of an extended stretch away from University Credit Union Center as they'll next travel to CSUN on Jan. 20 and to UC Santa Barbara on Jan. 22 before facing Cal State Fullerton in Davis on Jan. 27.
