Box Score SAN JOSE, Calif. — Senior
Andy Velasquez netted his second goal of the season early in the first half to draw the Aggies level, while freshman
Tim Weidinger added his first career score in the second half to make it a one-goal contest, but host San Jose State was too much for UC Davis, posting a 5-2 victory on Sunday afternoon.
With the Spartans taking a lead just 3:29 into the match, Velasquez was able to bring the Aggies back just seven minutes later with his team-best second goal of the year in the 11th minute, converting a pass from teammate
Robert Mejia to knot the score at one apiece.
San Jose State regained the lead with scores in the 21st minute and just before the end of the half on a penalty kick in the 43rd minute for a 3-1 lead at the break, but Weidinger was able to bring UC Davis back to within striking distance in the 75th, striking his first goal to the lower left side to make it 3-2.
The Aggies were unable to find the equalizer, however, as the Spartans scored twice in the final six minutes to ice the match.
San Jose State out-shot UC Davis, 17-11, and had 11 corners to just four for the Aggies. Mejia accounted for three of those attempts, while freshman
Keegan Walwyn-Bent and
Maximilian Arfsten added two apiece.
The Aggies remain on the road to close out a three-match road swing, heading to Southern California to take on San Diego State and San Diego next weekend. UC Davis takes on the Aztecs on Friday (Sept. 10) at 7 p.m., before meeting the Toreros on Sunday (Sept. 12) at 1 p.m.
