Box Score 1 ANNAPOLIS, Md. — UC Davis closed out day one of the 2021 Navy Open with a pair of victories, posting a 16-2 victory in the opener against Johns Hopkins before setting a school record with 26 goals in a 26-7 trouncing of Mount St. Mary's in its second match of the day on Saturday at Lejeune Hall in Annapolis, Md.
The 26 goals against The Mount broke the previous record set against Loyola Marymount in a 25-10 victory back in 1993, while the 19-goal margin of victory is tied for the second-longest in school history.
Freshman
Hal Goulter racked up seven of the 26 scores for the Aggies in only his second Division I match, scoring three in the first, two in the third, and two in the fourth, tying him for third on the school's single-match list. His total trails only the record of eight goals scored by Dave Schauer against UC Riverside in 1993 and Mike Gotelli against Pomona-Pitzer in 1997.
UC Davis jumped out to a 7-1 lead after one quarter, scoring the final six goals of the period, led 15-3 at the half and, following a close 4-3 third quarter, stepped on the gas and out-scored Mount St. Mary's by a 7-1 count in the fourth, including the final six scores of the contest.
In all, 10 different Aggie players found the back of the net, with
Michael Plastino and
Aaron Voggenthaler adding four goals and
Levi Murtaugh collecting a hat trick.
In the opener, senior
Nir Gross finished with a double hat-trick on the day, leading a group of seven goal scorers for the Aggies as part of a 16-2 win over Johns Hopkins. The six goals tied a career high for the 2019 ACWPC All-America second teamer, originally set against LMU on Sept. 28 of that year.
Aleix Aznar Beltran added a hat trick, while Goulter and
Holden Neach added two apiece to help pace UC Davis, which jumped out to a 5-0 lead, held an 8-1 advantage at the break, and never looked back.
Aznar Beltran, Voggenthaler,
Connor Norton, Neach, and Goulter all scored in their offical Aggie debuts.
In net, goalkeepers
Duncan Creed and
Aaron Wilson split time in the two matches, with Creed getting both starts and playing 16 minutes, while Wilson taking control in the second half. Creed finished with nine total saves, including five against The Mount, while Wilson was busy to the tune of 14 saves on the day, 10 of those coming in the opener against the Blue Jays.
The Aggies close out tournament play against a pair of nationally ranked opponents on Sunday (Sept. 5), taking on No. 17 Bucknell and No. 19 Navy at 7:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. PT, respectively.
