NEWS & NOTABLES: Big West Conference play is finally here for the UC Davis women's volleyball team, which heads to Southern California to take on travel partner UC Riverside on Tuesday (Sept. 21) before returning home to the University Credit Union Center to host Hawai'i on Saturday (Sept. 25) at 7 p.m. The Aggies are coming off a split of their final two non-conference contests, cruising to a 3-1 (25-16, 25-13, 20-25, 25-14) upset of Pac-12 power California at home before falling by a 3-0 (25-12, 25-22, 25-19) score at Saint Mary's just 24 hours later. Freshman Amara Aimufua logged a team-high 14 kills to lead two teammates (Lana Radakovic and Olivia Utterback each had 13) in double figures against the Golden Bears as UC Davis hit a robust .382 in the victory, while Shira Lahav dug up 23 balls for her second 20-plus dig performance of the year. Aimufua picked up her sixth double-digit kill performance of the year against Saint Mary's, adding 12 more kills in the loss. Tuesday's match marks the Aggies' first Big West contest since the end of the 2019 season, which ended with a 3-0 victory at UC Riverside. UC Davis is 5-7 all-time in conference openers, snapping a six-match skid with a 3-2 victory over UC Irvine at home in 2019. The Aggies are 28-27 all-time against UC Riverside dating back to 1974, having won the last eight straight and 21 of the last 23 against the Highlanders, but are just 1-15 against the perennial power Rainbow Wahine, posting their lone win in the series in five sets at home in 2013.

Thanks to his first career brace, Arfsten now leads the team with three goals and seven points overall, followed closely by Grant Fidler (who tallied the assist on Arfsten's game-winner against the Gaels) with a pair of goals and five points. NEWS & NOTABLES: The UC Davis women's soccer team enters this week's Big West Conference openers on a bit of a roll, carrying a three-match winning streak — and wins in four of its last five — into matches at CSU Bakersfield (Sept. 23) and CSUN (Sept. 26) to start the league schedule. The Aggies have outscored the opposition by a 7-1 count during their recent winning streak — the team's longest since winning three-straight matches from Aug. 24-31, 2018 — using a late rally to upend Saint Mary's on the road in their lone match last week. Facing a team that had surrendered only three goals all year, UC Davis posted a 2-1 win over the Gaels, getting the tying score from Risa Yamada in the 75th minute and the winner by Jayde Holley in the 83rd. Saint Mary's broke a scoreless deadlock with a goal in the 22nd minute, ending the Aggies' shutout streak of 241:16, but the two late scores were enough to hand the Gaels their first loss (5-1-2) of the year. UC Davis is 3-5-4 all-time in Big West openers, looking to snap a two-match skid dating back to a 1-0 win over Hawai'i to start the 2017 conference campaign. Freshman Sammie Ruelas and sophomore Leslie Fregoso are tied for the team lead with seven points apiece, while Ruelas leads the squad — and ranks tied for sixth in the league — with three goals as eight different Aggies have found the back of the net. Yamada and Fregoso are tied for the team and Big West lead with three assists apiece, while senior goalkeeper Nicki Rucki is third in the conference with a 1.13 goals against average, fifth with a .743 save percentage, and tied for first with three shutouts.
