DAVIS, Calif. — Sophomore
Sierra Atkins finished second with a time of 19 minutes, 57.2 seconds to lead UC Davis to a dominating win in the women's 6-kilometer race at the second-annual Stump Invitational collegiate cross country meet, held at Wildhorse Golf Course Friday morning. The Aggies scored 23 team points, well ahead of UC San Diego's runner-up total of 94.
Cal Poly won the men's 8K with 30 points, edging UC Santa Barbara (47) and host UC Davis (90).
Atkins led five Aggies among the top nine finishers in the women's 6K, with
Brianna Weidler (3rd),
Brooke Starn (4th),
Madison Kackley (6th) and
Hope Bergmark (9th) rounding out the team's scorers. The UC Davis men were led by
Austin Vasquez in seventh place at 23:351, while
Simon Fuller crossed as the team's No. 2 finisher at 12th overall (23:54.0).
The Stump Invite is named in memory of Sarah Sumpter, who earned All-America and Big West Conference Athlete of the Year status despite a diagnosis of a brain tumor on the eve of the 2009 cross country season. In fact, September 10 is known in UC Davis circles as "Stump Day," the date of Sumpter's diagnosis and return to action in 2011. Sumpter, also the namesake for the Sarah Sumpter Perseverance Award, was inducted into the Cal Aggie Athletics Hall of Fame in 2020.
UC Davis returns to action on September 23 for Oregon's Dellinger Invitational.
