Aggies ink Seattle’s DeBruhl to letter of intent

Record-setting Seattle Academy guard bolsters UC Davis backcourt

DAVIS, Calif. — Seattle Academy record-setting guard Leo DeBruhl is the newest member of the UC Davis men's basketball team, signing a National Letter of Intent to continue his academic and athletic career with the Aggies, Head Coach Jim Les announced on Monday.

A four-year varsity starter for the Cardinals in the Pacific Northwest, DeBruhl was named the Emerald Sound Conference MVP and was one of 12 seniors from the state of Washington nominated to play in the prestigious McDonald's All-American Game after averaging 22.1 points, 6.0 rebounds, and 6.0 assists per game last season, while shooting 40 percent from beyond the arc. He helped lead Seattle Academy to a 16-1 record, a district title, and a runner-up finish at an unofficial Class 1A state tournament, during the shortened 2020-21 season.

DeBruhl reached 1,000 career points during his junior year and finished his career as Seattle Academy's all-time leading scorer with 1,345 points, while also setting the school record for career assists with 381.

That season came on the heels of a 2019-20 campaign that saw him earn first-team WIAA all-state tournament team and league MVP honors, averaging 18.1 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 5.2 assists per game, while shooting 45 percent overall and 35 percent from beyond the arc en route to a third-place finish at the state tournament.

After averaging just over 10 points and nearly four assists as a freshman, DeBruhl was an all-league first team selection and league MVP as a sophomore in 2018-19, averaging 16.7 mpg, 5.5 rpg, 5.2 apg, 2.4 steals per game, while helping lead the Cardinals to the state tournament for only the fifth time in school history and the first time since 2014.

The 6-foot-3 Seattle, Wash., native becomes the fourth newcomer to the roster for the 2021-22 season, joining Nevada transfer Kane Milling and Sacramento products Cameron Niles of Del Campo HS and Sione Lose from Capital Christian HS. Milling will have three years of eligibility remaining with the Aggies, while Niles and Lose join the program as true freshmen.
