Holmes in third place after Day 1 of Big West hep

Aggie MPH grad student hits two personal records to open conference championships

IRVINE, Calif. -- UC Davis graduate student Sydney Holmes set personal records in each of the high jump and shot put, highlighting her Day 1 events of the heptathlon during the Big West Conference Multi-Event Championships at Anteater Stadium Friday. She currently holds third place with a total of 2,794 points, trailing the Cal Poly duo of Julianna Ruotolo (2,879) and Adelae Fredeen (2,911).

The master of public health candidate and 2020 neurobiology, physiology & behavior graduate is the lone Aggie in the heptathlon, making her UC Davis' sole representative during this weekend's portion of the conference championships. The team has no entrants in the decathlon.

Holmes opened the day with a 788-point push thanks to a her 15.41-second time in the 100-meter hurdles. She then breezed through the high jump, posting only one miss through the first five heights. Holmes missed her first two attempts at 1.52 meters (4 feet, 11.75 inches) but then cleared the bar in her third and final try. She then beat the 1.55 mark on her second attempt, eclipsing her previous best of 1.53.

Holmes then hit her second PR in the day's third event, the shot put. She opened with a throw of 10.88m (35-8.5) then slipped to 10.66m (34-11.75) in the second round before unleashing a 11.43m (37-6) in the final round. Holmes' previous best was an 11.22m push at the CSF Tri-Meet earlier this season. That final mark also amounted to a 46-point improvement from her first-round throw.

She wrapped up her day with a 27.08 in the 200-meter dash for another 705 points. Her 2,794 total has her in front of a tight pack of UC Santa Barbara's Jessica Swalve (2,778), Long Beach State's Sydney Barnes (2,771) and UCSB's Sofia Bailey (2,769) behind the two Cal Poly leaders.

Day 2 of the heptathlon, which consists of the long jump, javelin throw and 800 meters, begins at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
