BERKELEY, Calif. — UC Davis enjoyed a strong start to Saturday's America East game in Berkeley when Catherine Potente scored the first goal of the evening, 11 minutes and 15 seconds after action started at Underhill Field, by collecting a loose ball and punching it into Cal's cage to give the Aggies an early 1-0 advantage.

That lead held until halftime, and throughout the early minutes of the third quarter until the Golden Bears evened the score midway through the period and took the lead two minutes into the fourth quarter.

Even though UC Davis trailed by one, that deficit did not last long because Shea Gavin pulled her team even with Cal four minutes later by collecting a rebound from a shot she initially took that deflected back in her direction.

It was her second swing in as many seconds that led to the game-tying goal.

Knotted at 2-2, Madison Theodore created her team's final scoring opportunity of regulation with 35 seconds remaining, but saw her attempt just roll wide of its intended target.

Theodore took another one of her team-high five shots in the first overtime period, which would have ended the evening in UC Davis' favor if Cal's goalkeeper did not deflect the ball at the last possible moment.

Since the score remained untouched after the first 10-minute sudden-death period, the game continued to double overtime until Cal scored the game-winner 41 seconds in to edge the Aggies, 3-2.

UC Davis will now return home for Friday's 4 p.m. home finale vs. Stanford with a 1-6 overall and 0-4 America East record. The Cardinal will face a Cal squad on Tuesday that is now 2-4 and 1-3 before ending its week at Aggie Field Hockey Facility.
